Article Name: AT&T-iPhone calling woes on redial
Purpose: An editor b*tch fest on the iPhone with AT&T Wireless.

Actual article:

When I sat down to write an article about the unreliable cell reception my iPhone gets on Monday, I knew I wasn't alone in my frustration. Friends and acquaintances often joke that the iPhone is a cool computer but a lousy phone.

But judging from the response I received from the "AT&T takes the phone out of iPhone" story published on Tuesday, I definitely struck a nerve with a lot of iPhone users, not just in San Francisco but around the country. The overwhelming majority of them reported similar problems of frequent and consistent dropped calls and garbled conversations, and even delays with voice messa...

"This sounds like a joke, but it is an actual fact: I get better reception and service for my iPhone in a grain silo in my grandmother's rural Indiana farm than I do in my bedroom in Los Angeles. Seriously," wrote another person.

"Recently I was in the emergency room with mother for 12 hours. I had no cell service. Now I have an iPhone 3G and a Blackberry Curve, both with AT&T. Neither worked. Yet the lady next to my mother and a woman across from us both had perfect service. One used Sprint, the other Verizon," another reader wrote.

A San Luis Obispo, Calif., reader said he gets no iPhone 3G reception on many stretches of Highway 101.

"Last Friday I was heading south on 101 at the Cuesta Grade and got stuck in a nightmarish traffic...

You are welcome. I would post the comments, but it's like 279 comments of "waaaaah, waaaah! I hate AT&T because my iPhone NEVER gets service!!!"

I just switched to a Motorola RAZR and I have no service problems, so it really can't be the network, can it?

Well I live in Northern Ohio, my husband has the Iphone, I have the Eternity. Neither of us has had an issue with the network..and we've had the service since '06...so I kinda think people are expecting perfection and when they don't recieve it they freak out and complain.

Most of the people I've met complaining about the service are comparing it to other ATT phones they had (or in some cases still DO have). This isn't saying that the issues are universal (towers are MUCH stronger in the midwest simply because they don't have to deal with as many mountain issues)

I agree. I have the 8900 and have very few issues. Maybe a little echoing now and then.

I have owned all three iphone and all three have the same problem, for no reason they would just say no service in the same places that any other AT&T phone would always have service in, I used to take my iphone and place it next to my Nokia, both on AT&T and you could watch the iphone say no sevice for a few minutes and then go back to service for a little bit and then you guessed it back to no service, while my Nokia would have full bars the whole time and not just Nokia, any phone other than the iphone would work just fine. Some people blame the network but from what I have seen its not the network it the iphone.I did like the iphone but it just did not work as it should, so I use a Nokia 5800 that I bought from Nokia, it only cost $15 for...

I think the i-Pod is a great device. There are a lot of phones that are also great. I just think these things are better off separate.
