Multiple phones, family plan, SIM cards

UncleWilley

Sorry if I'm the zillionth person to ask this type of question. I couldn't find an existing thread that matched my question.

Let's say I get 4 phones on a family plan, (2)regular phones (non-PDS/smartphones) AND (2) Blackberry Bolds. Later I cancel the subscriptions for the (2) BB Bolds and pay the early cancellation fees (2 x $175), would I be able to use the SIM cards from the (2) regular phones in the BB Bolds??? Would the ATT system still detect the BBs and charge for data?

Call me crazy but my wife and I want to use BB Bolds for voice/texting AND for synching calendars, contacts etc. with our PCs via Outlook BUT we do NOT want to use the internet. YES, this is another attempt to NOT have to pay for data that we do NOT wan...

What incentive does corporate America have to create new innovative devices if there is no profit involved?

Charge a price for the phone that makes a profit or come up with more reasonable price, lower volume data plans. At $30/mo. for a data plan, over 3 years, that equates to OVER $1,000. Unlocked BB Bolds are available on Amazon for app. $550. Are people losing money at that price?

Since you seem to be so smart, come up with an all-encompassing solution for the majority of America's cell phone customer base who want every phone for free.

There is no easy answer to this. The $30 data plan is an investment that has the potential to save you even more money by saving you the time of checking emails and going to a computer to do other tasks.

Wireless carriers make no money on the equipment. If consumers were willing to pay full retail and just purchase rate plans then maybe the model would change. However consumers want the latest and greatest phones for free and cheap rate plans with no contracts. I'm sorry but WTF?

Why not give us the option?

I would buy a BB at a "fair", not inflated price, if I'm not required to get an expensive data plan. Who knows, some/many customers who buy such phone might decide they want data at a later date.

Full retail pricing on a BlackBerry IS a fair and uninflated price.

What do you mean by full retail price of BB? The normal price with a data plan? I'm not aware of an option to pay a diff. price w/o data.

Verizon gives you the option. With Verizon a customer can walk in the door and purchase a phone at full retail price and not be required to sign a contract. Or a customer can bring their own equipment (obtained from a friend, purchased on ebay etc...) and have it activated with no contract. It is called Month-to-Month.

using the other SIM cards in the Bolds will result in the Data plans being added to the account automaticaly...only way around it would be to save the 175 term fees, add that to the what you would pay for the phones, and buy unlocked equipment...

you could buy an unlocked phone and use that.. I don't work for ATT, but from what i've heard, if you provide an unlocked (unbranded) device, you can activate it without the internet package.

You can use your current SIM on an unlocked BB phone, and you will NOT be required to get a data plan. If you use an unlocked phone, you will only be able to talk and send SMS.

Oh really? Well guess what? Because I have higher standards than ATT, I have been using an UNlocked/UNbranded Nokia N95-3 since December of 2007 and I can indeed do internet on my phone! MMS too btw! Hs!!!

And my next phone is going to be unlocked/unbranded too. All I need from ATT is a frinkin SIGNAL, that's it. I don't need any of they're phones because I have higher standards than ATT does.

Ok mr Customer wanting to use the phone the way you want to. Is it your network? No it isn't it's att's. And if ATT wants to tell you you need to pay for something to use specific equipment on THEIR network guess what? They can because it's THEIR network not YOURS. You want to use whatever phone you want at whatever price you want? Build and maintain your own network and service. Until then shut you freaking piehole already it's getting old.

IM NOT TRYING TO GET YOU TO SWITCH. But if your options are open to other networks and if you're wanting a PDA with no data plan, look at the Verizon Wireless XV6900 (HTC Touch) for 9.99, Motorola Moto Q9m for 49.99, or the Verizon Wireless SMT5800 for 99.99.

Again, these do not require a data pack. I was just saying that IF your options are open for other networks, to look at these phones.

Unfortunately, those phones all suck! And yes I DO own the XV6900. I only use it as a tethered modem however. That 5800 is garbage. They should pay you to walk out the store with it honestly. The Q9M is a Motorola. Enough said. Switching to Verizon is NOT an option if you want a Blackberry. ALL Blackberries on Verizon have ALWAYS required a data plan.

That is correct. In this context, all they want is email which is $29.95. If you want to actually use a web browser, then you're up to $45.

Ugh.

Ok, well then they need to update their web site. I was helping someone pick a phone on their site last week, and I just confirmed it again this morning.

Pick a Blackberry from their web site, pick 450 minutes and the options for data are:

Email @ $29 and web browsing at $45. For my area, the distinction is that you don't get full internet access with the $30 plan.

If you sell phones for Verizon, then you're in a better position to know. But if the web site leads a customer to believe something different, Verizon has a problem.

It says:

Email and Web for BlackBerry® $29.99/month

If you want tethering you must get the 44.99 pack. Other then that, the Email and Web for Blackberry is unlimited BlackBerry/PDA web browsing and email.

The 29.99 Unlimited Email and Web is all one needs unless one wants Wireless Sync in which case one will need the 44.99 Unlimited PDA feature. If one wants to tether then if one is on the Email and Web for 29.99 they will charge you 30 for the Mobile Broadband Connect feature and if one has the 44.99 Unl PDA feature they will charge you 15 to tether. If you plan to tether your data will add up to 59.99 per month which is basically a hook to try to force you to go ahead and add a USB modem or data card to your account. Don't do it though...that is another contract you have to keep versus just canceling a feature whenever you like.

The motorola Q9m is a great phone. I think many people get it mixed up with the Motorola Q9c. The 9m is the new verison of the 9c. The XV6900 has a shoter battery life then smartphones now, but if you're not using data, you shouldn't have a problem. The SMT5800 was a great phone, but now with the TP2 and all, it doesn't look like its worth anything. If you are going to use this for calls, text, and sync you will be fine with these phones. And if you choose to look into this, you have 30 days and if you do choose to live them at the end of your 30 days, Verizon will let you bring your number over so you can keep it.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

This is a good phone if you don't mind waiting for it to respond to your commands. I mean, this thing is s-l-o-w. It was the last phone I owned with Verizon, and one of the reasons I jumped ship.

If it's been upgraded since then, ok. I'll have to take your word for it. But even as just an email and contacts PDA/kinda-smart-phone, it is barely functional.

Love Verizon's coverage, hate their phones.

Every network puts there own software on phones. The enV Touch, enV2 and 3 have unlocked bluetooth, apps, ect. and you can change the themes on it. You can't use Google Maps because of BREW, but we are changing to Java with our new 4G LTE network.

Touch Pro 2 requires a unlimited data plan of 29.99. Its a great phone. It has WiFi, world roaming, 3.5G data, nice size screen, full slide out QWERTY. The moto is preowned, but works great. My dad has one and he loves it.
