Phone advise

My father is switching over from Verizon and needs a new phone. He needs a semi durable- easy to use flip phone. I think he'd like either the rugby or maybe the new Nokia that's coming out... Any advise? Does anybody know when the new Nokia flip phone is coming out?

If durability is a big key, the Moto Tundra is a lot better phone than the Rugby in my opinion.

If durability isn't really that big of a deal, I always direct older customers to the pantech breeze.

I'd steer clear of the Motorola Tundra, it's auditory quality has been wildly inconsistent. The Samsung Rugby is a pretty good rugged phone. But I'm sure a Nokia would fit the bill just fine.

FWIW, I have 2 Tundras bought 4 months apart.....they seem identical in terms of audio.

Granted thats a small sampling....

I wouldn't bother with the Tundra as research shows it is plagued by serious bugs and a seriously overinflated price tag. The new Sony Ericsson W518 seems to be doing well with positive reviews, and I can persoanlly tell you that the Nokia 6650 is a very good phone. It has great sound and reception. The Rugby seems to be getting mixed reviews so that may be a good first choice phone so it can be returned within 30 days if you don't like it.

My first Tundra did lockup on shutdown, but the one I picked up a couple of weeks ago had the software update that was supposed to fix that problem. It still take a little while to shutdown sometimes, but I've never had to pull the battery like I did on my first one. I flashed my original one that I bought in March and that one doesn't have the problem anymore either.

I haven't really noticed any other serious bugs. Amazon Wireless has them for a great price and it's probably one of the best phones that I've ever had.

I think it's a pretty solid, rugged phone, has great reception, audio, etc.

FWIW,
Tim

Well, you got lucky getting one in maybe a thousand that is actually reliable. I believe the original poster would like a dependable phone where whether or not he gets a good one is the luck of the draw. There are much better phones for less money . Any other motorola would be a better choice such as something in the RAZR2 line. The Nokia flips would also be a good solid choice. If Motorola wants to make more of those "I can take a beating" Tundra phones for AT&T, then they should make sure the inside works as well as the outside. Maybe they will get it right on the Tundra2 or whatever is next.

I have a v9 and v9x laying in a drawer. The micro USB port on the v9 took a beating when I gave it to my wife, the c. The v9x is pretty minty. I guess I was really lucky with the Tundras I got as I don't miss either.

Geez...$49.99 at Amazon Wireless...that's not that expensive. The no commitment price may be high, but it's pretty high on most phones.

I don't deal with thousands of phones though. I would imagine that the truth lies somewhere between 2 out of 2 good (100% good) and 999 in 1000 bad (99% bad.)

I know this probably won't count for much, but the customer reviews on AT&T's site put the Tundra ahead of both the w518a and the 6650. Less people would recommend either of them to a friend.

In any case the OP will hope...

Well, first off, I would not buy a phone off of amazon if they were giving it away. Maybe a few years from now when they might know what they're doing but right now they are terrible. As for the reviews on AT&T's website all I can say is that all those glowing reviews about the tundra are probably mostly from klutzes who are always dropping , throwing or abusing their phone. They also like the phone enough to be able to live with the bugs even though they are serious defects. As far as the W518 and the 6650 go, they are indeed good phones but you have some illiterate people who bought the phones thinking it did more than what was advertised, and then slam the phones when they find out that's not the case. If you are going to rely on the AT...

While the Nokia 6650 was a pretty good phone...its OS might be a little more complicated than the OP was wanting.

I still have trouble operating it when a custy brings one in asking for help. ^_^

But it could just be me. 😁

I have to concede to your point there. With the 6650 I like the look, feel and sound quality of the phone, and I always had great reception but the OS was interesting. The menu system is very different from the motorolas I was used to and it took several clicks to get to the simplest of functions that were buried in menus that were in the last place you'd think to look. That was the only thing I didn't care for about the 6650. I would probably still have it if AT&T didn't get a few more Moto Z9n in stock and selling for 9.99. So I am back with a motorola and one to two clicks to get what I want instead of 4 or 5 clicks. I still stand by the 6650 but the wierd menu layout was a bit much.
