ATT refuses to allow customers to upgrade on granfathered plans

Well i just had a wonderful chat with both a regular customer service agent and their supervisor.

The short story is, i am on a 5 year old grandfathered Family share plan. I hardly use the minutes on this plan and didnt want to change my plan when i was going to "upgrade" one of my lines and sign a new contract.

According to the agent and the supervisor the only way i could ever upgrade my phone and sign a new contract with AT&T would be to go up $20 a month to a higher plan with a ton of minutes i would never use.

The reasoning they told me was they are useing "third generation phones" hence why they say 3g on them and a third gen phone cannot be used on an older plan, the phone would not work. At the point they told me thi...

I'm going to assume that you are on an at&t wireless plan(pre cingular, Pre at&t mobility) and hence you are on a plan that cingular never offered and at&t mobility obviously never offered. The reason you can't get a new phone and keep your plan has nothing to do with the phones at all, it has to do with the billing and activations system and how it is set up. When we go to upgrade it automatically makes us choose a new rate plan and there is no way to keep your older plan. You always reserver the ability to buy a compatibly unlocked gsm phone that has 850/1900 mhz and use it on your old plan and at&t would never know the difference.

Actualy i am on a Cingular rate plan. Family talk 450 with unlim Mobile to mobile 5000 night and weekend for 2 lines for 49.99. I just upgraded another line on the account just 6 months ago without an issue with no need to change anything on my account. In fact to upgrade my secondary line to exact same phone thats on my primary line they are saying it cannot be activated on it. What has AT&T done in the past 6 months that makes a plan that still works on current phones no longer valid?

You should have NO issues upgrading on this plan. It is a plan that can be offered through at&t's retention department, meaning it is still active. I run into someone on this rate plan at least once a month.

Best bet, stop by a local store. Avoid online or over the phone.

Nothing repeat call..you got a dumb rep and an even dumber supervisor probably outsourced. That is actually a plan offered by retention still...

ccare and isell are both correct. You need to go into a store. Dealing with folks over the phone has very few benefits and tons of pitfalls, some of which you have just experienced.

Go find yourself a locally owned store and do business with them. Good luck.

They all speak the truth. It may be a commission cut but we would much rather see the customer happy than leaving. To them, over the phone, your nothing but a drop in a bucket.

As was stated in some of the earlier posts, it is best to go into a local store and do your upgrade there. Many call centers require their reps to change the rate plan on the account to a current plan when an Upgrade is done. Most stores do no have this policy and would be more than happy to help you get a new phone without changing your plan.

You are a "Blue" customer with a "Blue" plan. We don't offer this anymore and it is another network. "Orange" is the term we use now. So you need to "Migrate" over to the new network. I know it sucks but Manufactors don't make phones for it nor does AT&T fully support it either.

It is all the same. Trust me I deal with this a lot. Also if you were smart and were on Orange like you say, then you would go to a corp store or authorized retail and have them select keep same rate plan when they upgrade you. Over the phone can't do that. Also, avoid the iphone.

Best bet is a corp store. Aviod calling in for they will make you change. I take escalations in AT&T, I would know about people complaining about rate plans and grandfather.

If you work in a corporate call center you sure can. You select "No Plan Change". Pretty simple if you ask me.

We use Phoenix. So it might kick it back doing so. But if you wanted the rebates and best offer for the phone it will make you change. Same reason why Phoenix won't let you upgrade and select the current Family plan.
