Couple of Questions - Upgrading to Nokia E71

Hey AT&T dudes and dudettes,

I've been using my unlocked Nokia 6300 on the AT&T network for the past several months. I just received my new Nokia E71 and plan to start using it this weekend.

- Since the E71 is a 3G phone, do I need to replace my old SIM card with a new one, or will my old SIM card suffice? (FYI it's a Cingular-branded SIM card that's a few years old.) I've never owned a 3G phone before, so I wasn't sure about whether 3G phones use a different type of SIM card.

- I pay $15.00 per month for the Data Unlimited plan. Can I continue to use this with the E71, or will I be forced to pay $30/month since the E71 is a PDA-type/smart phone?

Thanks in advance for your assistance! 🙂

Get a new SIM. Don't tell them why and don't let them see the E71. Then watch your bill and go from there.

I was once told that you would need a new sim but I was just using my wife's old Shine. I've had my sim for about 3 or 4 yrs and it worked. I'm sure with in a week or two they will know what phone you have. If you're registered with att online just watch to see what phone is listed for that line

Thank you all for your comments. Let me see if I understand this correctly... if I am not using an AT&T phone (which I haven't been for a couple of months now), then AT&T reserves the right to withdraw my Data Unlimited plan?? If this is true, what's the rationale behind it?!

Actually the E71 is considered a Smartphone. So it is not supposed to the use Unlimited Media Net option. That is why they say to keep checking to make sure it does not get removed. It is supposed to use the unlimited smartphone internet (or PDA connect. I forget) that is like $29.99 a month.

The PDA plan is $30 a month now, and the system does not usually remove the $15/mo plan, it will just start charging you pay per use charges of $.01 per KB. Also your mywireless account will not auto update to the phone you are using, but the system might recognize that the device is a smart phone due to the amount and speed of the data transfers. Use the *service *3282#, and it will tell you rather your using data from your media net plan, or if you are being charges PPU. it will show as overage data.

So you really think that smart phones transfer more data and at a faster rate than any other phone? Get REAL! It ONLY depends on what you are using the phone for. In theory a PDA phone user might use more data that is why they charge more. But in reality most non-smart phone users with unlimited data use just as much if not more data than people with smart phones. I highly doubt that they are going to flag his account because he has an unbranded e71.

Check with the maker of the phones. PDA's do process information quicker, and more of it. Also the non pda device's do not get the full content of the web pages, and do not get as much data sent to the phone. Therefore, do not on average use as much data as a PDA device.
On a PDA device more data = higher band width = system knowing it is a pda device. Sorry, but check facts before you go on assumptions.

So why don't they charge $30 to use data on a 6650? Or why didn't they charge it on the n75 or 6682? All of them used a version of s60 just like the e71. They only reason they charge more for data on a pda device is because they can. This argument has been made 1000 times without every proving that a PDA can use more data. a kb is a kb. streaming media like cellular video and youtube transfers way more data than an email on an e71 does that is why I see my customers who use unlimited media net on something like a shine using a ton more data than my blackberry customers do.

I installed Opera Mini on my unlocked Nokia 6300 (which is anything but a smartphone!) and I had full HTML browsing available to me. It works no differently than on my new E71... just a little bit slower due to the 6300's slower processor and EDGE connectivity, but Nokia has other 3G phones with faster processors that aren't PDA-type phones either.
