Anybody use ATT Data cards/modem?

ALL2020

I just ordered one as I need internet access for my laptop.

Any feed back on the cards or the service?

I purchased the Refurb AT&T USBConnect Mercury.
If there's one that better I am willing to exchange. Just picked a free one to test out the service. There's plenty of coverage in my area.

Thank you in advance.

Why would you get a refurb when a new one if free as well?

They are Free AFTER rebate. I need internet now, and don't have an extra $100 sitting around.

Any help regarding the service?

This is help sir,

#1, 90 day warranty versus 1 yr on new
#2, you have signed a 2 year agreement
#3, card goes bad you must purchase one at full price during agreement or pay to cancel service

Considering it is ALREADY refurbished odds are excellent it was ALREADY defective.

You might take that into consideration.

As far as the card it works very well. Be mindful of the 5 GB limit.

I am aware of all of these these. I work for another carrier.
I had plans on exchanging it during my 30 day period, when I get extra money in a couple weeks, since I did not ask for this information I did not feel the need to share that.

I just wanted info on service.

Thank you anyway.

Mine has worked pretty good. Plenty fast for youtube and what not.
Don't know about the 5GB limit, my plan says unlimited.
All in all I'm happy with it for my first cellular broadband card experience.
Hope this helps.

They work pretty well, especially in 3G areas. The former poster's plan was an old one. ATT only offers 5gb plans or smaller now. If you spend a bunch of time on YouTube, or other streaming sites, or play a lot of Video games online, it will eat up your 5gb in no time flat. If you do a bunch of emailing and just go to a few sites a day for information it will be fine. In other words, the data card works much better than the plan.

A couple of other notes pertaining to the data cards. First is that the data plan also gets you unlimited wifi at locations like Starbucks, McDonalds, and Barnes and Noble locations. Data used on the wifi is not counted against your 5gb, so use it often.

Secondly, it is a good idea to log onto www.att.com/communicationmanager every 6-8 weeks and see if there is an update to the Communications Manager software that is used to run the data card. Updates occur occasionally and will help with speed and reception.

I hope these help.

One other thing that I'm seeing is problems with the Communication Manager when Microsoft does an update with Vista. For whatever reason the drivers for the USB card disappear and will not allow the device to connect to the service. You just have to delete then reload the communication manager. Seems only to be a problem with Vista not ATT but still a pain in the butt. Also don't try Limewire or Bittorrent. They'll eat the 5GB fast.

mercury is good. it has class 12 edge so when not in a 3G area it's still pretty fast.

I completely forgot about tethering with my phone. That may workout better, no contract.
Let me look into that.

Make sure you download the connection manager from ATT first. Also using a 3G phone is recommended.

I have the Samsung a707 Sync. Is that 3G?

Yes it is 3G. If you don't have one, you will need the connection cable to go between the phone and the computer. I find that bluetooth does not work real well with tethering.

Oops. I also forgot to mention that you will need an internet package on your plan, or your bill will look like the national debt at $.01 per Kb.

yep. i would suggest getting another 3G phone than the Sync, but it's not a big deal.

The Sync is only capable of UMTS (1.8 on the download), a newer phone would be a wise idea.

VZW and Sprint cards absolutley smoke a crappy data card for ATT.

I didn't get the card.

I tried using my phone as a modem but was not impressed. And I'm not completely comfotable with the 5GB

I'm just gonna get Fast Access DSL/WiFi and land line and bundle my services.
I only plan to use my laptop at home for the most part.
I just need it for school.
