Unlocked IPhone
I have AT&T and I am currently without a contract. I really want an IPhone but I don't want to pay for a data package, so I was thinking about buying an unlocked one through Ebay. A very honest potential seller told me that if I was to buy an unlocked IPhone, after 30 days of using it, AT&T would somehow see it on my account that I am using an IPhone and automatically start charging me the extra costs. Can anybody tell me if this is true? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Pretty much yes. They can tell what phone you are using regardless of whether or not it is locked.

I had a customer admit to me they thought they could get away with it.. he called in wanting to know why his bill was 11,235.86. 🙂

My customer was only about a grand.
He'd bought an iPhone for his number and wanted to put it on his wife's number. I told him about having to get the feature put on his wife's number and the whole spiel. He got pissed and didn't like my answer, but he was very nice to me the next month when his bill was so high.

Thanks for your quick response. In my opinion that is just wrong to charge extra like that without the consumer knowing it. Can one of you help me understand why I can use any phone I like with AT&T by putting my sim card in it and I will not be charged any extra and that is ok, but as soon as I would use an IPhone that is not ok, and I would get an unexpected charge on my bill. How can they legally do that without notifying the consumer first?

You've been notified dude. You were notified when you signed your service agreement (or accepted the terms) when you first subscribed. And AT&T has never said there are not terms and conditions associated with different handsets. That is the deal with the iPhone.

Because the iphone requires a data package. If you use the services on it without the data package you will get charged PPU. Stop whining and pay the $20 a month. Either that or get something different.

Actually, since most of the truly unlocked iPhones available on eBay are the 2G model, sig is right in stating $20.00.
Unfotunately, though, it seems that people still want something for nothing. Cell phone companies made huge mistakes when the idea was still new by giving the house away for free, and now people are whining about having to pay a reasonable price for service.
