Sim Card Swapping

Snuggles

Oct 6, 2008, 11:45 PM
I'm a new iPhone owner and wondering if I could get a secondary phone such as the Samsung Rugby and swap my sim card from iphone to Rugby and vice versa. Would I still get unlimited text, pic, video, web going from iphone to regular phone?

In short Yes but there will be strings attached when buying a new Rugby. Like the unactivated retail price of the handset.

GSM handsets AREN'T activated! I've bought 3 handsets on ebay, and I've taken NONE of them to ATT to get them activated. You SIMPLY buy a GSM handset and put a sim card in.

This is probably a dumb question, so excuse me for asking... Does this mean that GSM handsets are not "locked"? I am a current AT&T customer and looking at all my options.

If the phone is unlocked it will work with any SIM as long as it supports the proper band ie 1800/900 Eroupe or 1900/850 AT&T Mobility USA Or if you want to go a step higher 2100/900 SoftBank Japan. Or heck how about 1900/1700 T-Mobile USA.

Now if the phone is locked to only one serivce provider ie AT&T you can ONLY use that services SIM in the phone. It must be unlocked to be compatible with other cell phone networks.

GSM handsets from carriers are locked until a contract is fulfilled at such a time you can get the unlock code and take the phone to another carrier.

There are also unlocked/unbranded handsets that you can buy at Best Buy or ebay.

I bought my unlocked/unbranded Nokia N95-3 on ebay for $491. It can be used on either ATT or Tmo. But the 3G will only work on ATT because of the 3G bands being different.

I have a locked iphone and samsung rugby that I switch between. Yes you can use both for calling, and texting, but your iphone internet package will NOT work on the rugby. You would have to go back and add media net, but I don't use internet with rugby, it sucks on that phone anyways.
