Here are priorities:

#1 Excellent call quality and signal strength.
#2 Quad band for international travel.
#3 Fast, easy texting. (Qwerty would be nice)
#4 Excellent battery life.
#5 No need for data plan, only call/text.
#6 Camera not necessary.
#7 Smallish form factor.
#8 Simple is good.

I'm intrigued by the TMobile G1 which is not out yet as it looks to be a simple phone with qwerty keyboard. However, I've been loyal to AT&T and have had good success travelling with their network.

First question. Do smart/pda phones require a data plan?

I had an early Treo and the call quality was awful. They were also too big/heavy as is the

I had the original Blackjack (not sure about the Blackjack II, but I've heard good things about it) but it would fit most of your needs

- Good Call Quality/Signal Strength
- Quad Band
- Qwerty Keyboard
- Battery life was ok 😕
- Doesn't require data plan (unless of course you want to use the internet - it does require the data plan or unlimited text feature to qualify for the mail in rebate though)
- Does have a camera (and pretty good one at that)
- Small form for a PDA depending on which battery you use
- Its Windows mobile - so you know its not simple 😈

Thanks dromant, I'll look seriously to the Blackjack 2. Anyone else care to consult on this or any other phone based on my priorities in the first thread message?

you should look for the att equivelant to the blitz or env2. you sound like you would be good with a simple phone with a keyboard and not a pda.

I would look at a blackberry pearl. It should fit all your needs. And since it is 100% customizeable you can make it as simple or complicated as you wish. The blackberry curve has a better keyboard but is slightly larger.

The blackjack II is a good option too, but it isn't as easy to use and isn't as customizeable. Plus, the screen isn't as good outdoors.
