New account verses new line.

I recently tried to add a new line and get a blackberry curve. I was told the phone would cost me $199 with a $100 rebate. However, if I was opening a new account the phone would be free. Either way I have to sign a two year agreement so why the difference? It seems like ATT is punishing customers for being loyal.

just suck it up and pay it. If you cancel you account and reopen, hances are there will be a deposit, and if there isn't there will still be activation fee's. $36 for the first line and $26 for any others. not to mention proration no the bill becasue of starting a new bill cycle. Honestly it's not worth it to cancel and reopen. You won't be able to keep your number and you'll wind up paying the difference of the phone in the bill.

Yea. I guess I don't understand why AT&T doesn't value their existing customers as much as new customers. You see my point right?

If it is a third party they make their own rules. They get more commission off a new activation instead of an add a line and that is why the discount is different.

exactly. you were not dealing with AT&T directly, so it was not the company that was not valuing you. it was an agent trying to make more commission.

Well, I went to an AT&T store and was told $99 dollars. It's just frustrating. AT&T isn't the only company that does stuff like this . For instance the local cable company offers new subscribers special deals all the time that they don't offer to existing customers.

AT&T corporate and most exclusive agents have the same pricing for both new and existing customers. Some third party, national retail and web retailers charge different prices.

Not really sure if you have been reading the replies to your response or if you took the time to read the small print on any of these third party websites. Lets say that you are going through Amazon for a phone because of the lower advertised price. It will stipulate that it has to be a new activation one a plan of $60 or higher to receive that pricing on the product. Now in the case of the Blackberry Curve - you go into a store and are eligible for an upgrade you would be charged $199.99 for the phone, reguardless if its a new account or an upgrade. Also, the rebate is honored, at least in this market, dependant upon a texting plan of $20 or higher OR a BBUNL plan which starts at $30. AT&T isn't showing new customers any special treatm...
