Can you tell me, if a phone says it supports POP 3 email, does that mean it can get push email?

It doesn't mean it can... but it doesn't mean that it cannot. The phone itself needs to support push email. Push email can be used with (most) pop3 emails. What phone were you looking at?

That's what I mean If the description of the phone itself says pop3 is supported. I mean in general, no specific phone. But let's say the blackjack 2, palm centro, samsung instinct.

I just started working for best buy mobile, and I'm a little unsure about this. I seem to get different answers from people I've asked. I just want to make sure I understand this. Another thing - if a phone supports pop3 email, does that necessarily mean all pop3 email providers? Let's say Comcast, for instance?

Again - the phone needs to support PUSH email. If the phone says it supports pop3 emails, that just means it will PULL the emails in (similar to the way microsoft outlook works - it will search for emails every x minutes). Look at the box of a blackberry... it says right on it that it supports PUSH email technology.

If a phone says supports pop3 emails - then just assume that it will work with all of the like. You'll probably never run into a pop3 that won't work - sometimes a setting needs to be enabled on the customers email server in order for it to work...

Sometimes carriers have features available to customers that gives them push technology. For example - the AT&T tilt has a $45 feature that gives it push capabilities.

it isn't a phone feature as much as a supported service. express mail can push mail to the phone. microsoft offers a service as well. nokias can run blackberry service but the phone doesn't support 'push'.

POP mail is not push mail. The ability to push the mail depends on who technology your email provider is using.

Push mail account technology is provided by MS Exchange, RIM Blackberry, and some IMAP providers. Apple will make it's .Mac mail a true Push provider and I beleive it works on IMAP.

Pop mail uses PULL not PUSH technology. Which means your device, if it supports POP, will poll your email provider at timed intravals starting at around 15 min and going up. With true PUSH mail, your mail server actually pings your device and tells it to sync the mail as soon as it arrives.
