GSM vs UMTS call quality

Ok, so I'm using a friend's Tilt for a few days. (This is the first time I try a 3G phone extensively) but I don't think the call quality, and most importantly, the clarity does not live up to that on my K790a. Could it be that the Tilt is crappy for clarity? Or is it -gasps- that 3G is not as good as GSM for clarity?

UMTS isn't really that much better, but the tilt as a phone is not great anyways. I like the call quality on the BJII and the Shine, but since I carried the 8525 I haven't been impressed with HTC's call quality all around. We just had a customer come in with that slide HTC phone from Tee Mo Bile and it sounded like garbage. HTC should maybe buy Motorola and get a better radio for the best PDA's on the market.

Well that sucks to know. I was waiting to get the iPhone 3G and switch from Verizon because I was hoping that UMTS was a lot like CDMA instead of being very similar to GSM. But if that's the case, maybe I'll think twice. From my experiences, GSM just plain out sucks.

Once thing that I've noticed that's very CDMAish, is that when I drive people can't tell I'm driving (they can't hear that sssshhhhhhhhh -shower sound) as in GSM phones.

I def think it's the Tilt, I used a friend's Q9h and it sounded a lot better than the Tilt.

Im using the Curve and have had hardly any problems. I carried the CU500 for quite awhile and loved the call quality. I really think its the radio and the towers that you run off of. CDMA is slowly coming to the GSM-like LTE/4G so VZ won't be any better. I always here a buzzing sound when I talk to my friends with VZ and the calls always drop. Try the MOTO Z9. The call quality is really nice.

GSM = TDM Technology
UMTS = CDM Technology
LTE = OFDM Technology

so I wouldn't exactly call UMTS GSM-like

UMTS VS GSM doesn't have anything to do with call quality ....
its data transfer that is the purpose of the technology .....

so depending on the phone ...
either u have a garbage phone or bad signal

UMTS has nothing to do with anything but DATA access

Well it is my understanding that UMTS = WCDMA and HSDPA, which is both data and voice. An entirely new voice network. So, that's why I'm wondering if this WCDMA network is close to CDMA.

Yes, WCDMA is very close to CDMA . wise anyway. I wear two hearing aids and WCDMA Does not effect them at all. GSM does.

No, I'm pretty sure UMTS uses a completely different interface. Really, UMTS is nothing: it's just like AT&T calling it "3G". UMTS and 3G mean nothing! All they really are, are WCDMA voice and HSDPA/HSUPA data, but being covered up by the names "UMTS" and "3G". It's kinda like people saying GSM, but in fact it's just TDMA.

UMTS allows voice and data to be used simultaneously on the same channel so there will be a difference in call quality. UMTS is a GSM core with a Wide-band-CDMA air interface. EV-DO is only for data. UMTS is voice and data.
