Now let's see if the FCC approves it. My guess is that it probably will happen as they don't even begin to talk about deals like this unless they have a good feel of what the FCC thinks beforehand.

Would this stop the relaunching of ATT Wireless that was supposed to happen in a few months? Seeing as SBC owns cingular?

Yeah it would, i think thats why they aredfoing it, which is pretty smart, if they launched, it would confuse the legacy customers, still on blue plans, this prevents, and helps to to Re Build Ma Bell ,like someone posted earlier

Lord I was dreading trying to explain that one. Its hard enough trying to explain why blue customer can't pay their bill in orange stores.

(My favorite analogy: Its kind of like cars. Ford owns Lincoln, Mercury, jaguar, and volvo. Just cause they're all owned by Ford doesn't mean you can return your Navigator to the nearest volvo dealership)

True enough, my favorite anaolgy is for 'why do i have to pay for the service is only used for a weeks and cancelled?' mine is if you buy a car and fill the tank then return it the same day, do you go back to thegasstation requesting a refund cuz you dodn't burn the gas? 🙄

Me, I just refer them to the terms and conditions. It isn't me sticking it to them it is the company and they consented to the sticking because they had to have a cell phone.

Sidenote: I'm from Louisiana (insert cliche southern/redneck/cajun joke) and our local phone service is with BellSouth. There have been several stories lastely on the local news about SBC also purchasing/merging with BellSouth. Any info on that? How would that affect this deal?

Do you think this would happen?

Cingular buys AT&T Wireless; SBC buys AT&T, drops the SBC name and rebrands itself as AT&T. The newly named SBC then buys BellSouth, so now the old SBC and BellSouth are AT&T. The once-again behemoth, AT&T, renames Cingular to AT&T Wireless.

i truthfully dont think that will happen, when SBC was eating companies up in the nineties their names all eventually dissolved. AT&T hasnt been doing that good of a job and i think that name has lost alot of prestige. My opinion is that they might call the MVNO something name generic like Bell Cell.

I very much disagree.

Whenever anybody hears "AT&T" they automatically associate it with a phone/internet/wireless company. Everybody knows what AT&T once was. Not everybody knows what SBC even is.

The name itself is worth $15 billion, and Ed Whitacre made it clear in his conference call today that AT&T's name is priceless in this industry, and will not be going away.

It kinda makes me sad as AT&T was broken up because it was a monopoly and that runs counter to the ideals of the free market. I am looking at what is happening the AWS service and looking at the Cingular rate plans, and I can't think that market consolidation is a good thing for the consumer.

From a business stand point however (which I know is not customer oriented neccessarily) AT&T Wireless was bought and ultimately taken out of the market because of bad decisions. A company can not stay in business giving everything away. Customers were obviously happy, but noone can stay in business that way.

that didn't kill the company. laying out cash for gsm networks, and rolling them out before the service was in place cost them. Having Siebel crash for 6 weeks last november cost the company. Not being up front with customers and having port ins take 6 -8 weeks last november cost the company. credits to customers didn't cost the company as much as the mistakes that had customers calling in seeking redress in the form of credits did.
Market consolidation means that Cingular won't have the same leve lof competition driving programs to entice customers to stay and while that may be good for the comapny, it isn't good for the consumers.

I heard Verizon...Verizon Landline..not VZW...is looking to buy bell south. So lets get this straight

ATT owns ATTWS. ATTWS breaks off. SBC and Bell South own Cingular.

Cingular buys ATTWS.

ATT plans to re-launch ATTWS. SBC buys ATT.

Now Verizon, who owns VZW, wants to buy Bellsouth who owns Cingular....who is owned by SBC who owns ATT.

I feel like I'm in Alabama.

No. Verizon formerly had plans to buy Qwest, and now will likely buy MCI Corp. Bellsouth would never sell out to Verizon. It would be more likely and better business sense for Bellsouth and SBC to merge after SBC's purchase of AT&T.

There was an article in RCRNews online today that said 12,800 jobs will be cut because of this merger. It sucks that so many people will be out of work and the industry will only get tighter.
