What Is The Policy ??

Hi gang....Have a question for the At&T reps here. I bought an iphone back in March ($499 - 16GB) and activated it on itunes. When I logged on to my account on the AT&T website, I noticed that I was eligible for a phone upgrade at that time, my thinking is because I bought the iphone unsubsidized. I understand that I signed up for a 2 year commitment with At&T when I activated the iphone but because I paid full price for the iphone, couldn't I get another phone later at a subsidized price if I was willing to sign a new 2 year deal ? When I go into my account now, it says that I'm not eligible for upgrade. My question, if I want to change phones to a BB 8310 or Bold when it is released, will I have to pay full retail AND sign a new 2 year dea...

I hope you're right. I love the iphone but i still can't get used to the non tactile keyboard. I may be better suited for the Blackberries. Any other opinions about the policy?

go look at your profile on the at&t website, it should say you are eligible to upgrade.

That's my problem. At first, the website said that I was eligible for upgrade, now it says I'm ineligible. Did the policy change or do you think there's a mistake ??

I had the same issue and I also had a few customers who had regular devices that were out of contract saying that it would not let them upgrade. I also bought iPhones on a new plan in April and had a co-worker check to see if I was eligible for an upgrade and it said I was.

I would go to your local store and have them check, since I checked mine yesterday I think it is probably a website glitch...

I will go to my local store and get the real deal. I can't for the life of me understand why my upgrade eligibility changed on the website. Thanks for the advice !!

I work for a COR retail store and I am pretty sure you will have to buy the new Blackberry at regular price, cause when you bought the Iphone you resign your contract for 24 months and if go to standard at&t phone or PDA you have to be eligable to upgrade to get the discounted price and that only happens every 18 months into your current 24 month contract.

So if you got your Iphone in March then you wont be eligable for a discount on a standard at&t phone or PDA untill June of 2009 which is 18 months away from last March

If this matters, I ported over from Verizon just to get the iPhone. So, I was a new customer at that time. I did not have an existing line to upgrade. I had no previous contract with AT&T when my wife and I ported over. Would this matter ????

if its anything like VZW (i kno i kno) then you should still get the discounted price.

the reason for the ETF is to offset the subsidizing of the phones. so if you never got a subsidy, then no ETF right??

well since i know att wont like that logic and wouldnt let you out with no ETF, just tell them that. i'm sure they would rather give you the discount on the new phone.

I'm not particulary concerned with a ETF since I have no plan on leaving AT&T, I just feel that since AT&T did not subsidize my initial phone, I should be eligible for a discounted phone just like any other new customer. Of course with the discount would be a new 2 year contract. There are no AT&T corporate sales person's that have definative answer to my dilema ?

When anyone purchases an iphone they are automatically resigned for 2 years of service. However the iphone purchase does not alter the upgrade date from the previous phone because the iphone is activated by the customer at home not through any system used by att. theres your answer.

So in other words, if there's NO previous phone, then I should be eligible for upgrade since this is a new line of service, right ?

actually thats not the answer...the new Iphone will be activated in store...what you said was correct answer with the 1G iphone but that is not the case with the new one. The reason behind this change is because at&t is taking a hit on some of the cost of the phone up front but will make it up plus some on the higher data package, and it will kepp some people from just buying it to unlock it cause if you activate it in store and dont register the phone with Itunes with a certain timer frame a ETF will be charged to the account...this persones best bet would be to ask the store manager if they can override the upgrade and make her eligable in the store...judging from a salesmen point of view I would do it only because they are resigning the c...

damn i work for att and am confused ..... everyone telling this guy the wrong thing and then someone else says something else

YOU DID NOT GET A DEVICE FOR A DISCOUNT SO WHEN U ARE READY U CAN GET A NEW ONE AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE AND SIGN THE 2YEAR FROM THAT DATE..... ERIKPKP09 IS 100% CORRECT ABOVE ME !!

if you work in cor then you should know what the policy on upgrades are. the iphone was not discounted and is not treated under standard aeu policy. please check your fact...

Im a bit confused. I work for an authorized retailer, and therefore cannot overide anything to "make" someone eligible. I was told by my management and RAE that because the iphone extended your contract by two years, you would not be eligible to upgrade until 1 year to 18months later, just like a subsidized phone. We were told the iphone was different then most phones in this way.
Because of this, we have been telling everyone who comes in looking for an iphone that they should use there upgrade or new activation discount to get at the least a free phone for back-up.
Have we been wrong all this time? 👀

Purchasing the original iphone and activating it on your account ONLY extended your contract. It should not have affected your upgrade status. It DID NOT change mine.

On the website, it says that I am NOT eligible for upgrade until 11/09, 18 months from the original date of purchase. I plan on staying with At&T, just NOT with the iPhone ...

Was your initial purchase with at&t the iphone? If so, I believe it is 18 months. For me, I bought a pearl to start then got an iphone 6 months later, it did not change my upgrade at that time.

Yes, my original purchase was the iPhone. By my understanding, current iPhone users will be able to "upgrade" to the new 3G iPhone and receive a subsidized price for it as long as you agree to a new 2 year deal. Why limit that offer to just the new iPhone ? Don't you think it would be a bit unfair to offer the upgrade for the 3G iPhone only ? I would like to use that available upgrade to purchase a BB Bold with a subsidized price instead.

WOW !! This has turned into a monster !! As the OP, I am getting a bit confused also. Basically, my wife and I ported to AT&T (2 NEW lines of service), my wife getting a BJII and I got a iPhone. I paid full price for the iphone and signed a 2 year deal for service. Since At&T did not subsidize the cost of a new phone (iPhone)and I'm not quite happy with the it, why couldn't AT&T allow me to sign another 2 year deal and give me a discounted phone in its place ? I hope this clears up the confusion. By the way, I have NO interest in the 3g iPhone.

Since you bought the Iphone for full price you are eligible to upgrade to any phone that at&t offers with a discount. The only thing you would have to do is extend your contract on that line 2 years from the day you upgrade. If for some reason you are having a problem with that just call customer service and have a manager note the account. Matter a fact if you don't mind me asking what state are you out of because i would be able to note the account for you depending on your market. 😉

I'm a manager in customer care. If you need it noted on your account then i'll have to give you my email address or something and i can go in and have this placed on your account so that there isn't any conflict when you go to a corporate store or call customer care to process the upgrade.

if your line was a new activation you would always be eligable to get a new phone other the the iphone at the 2 year pricing with a 2 yr contract extension it would be same as if you already had the equipment and started service and somehow was put on a 2 yr contract call customer service we can override any upgrade eligability dont worry about it

well for some reason some corp store reps don't read csp and deny that getting a phone without a contract is possible other ones are happy to assist depends on who you get unfortunately for best results call customer care first then go from there cause if we say something its notated on the account if you go to store they could tell you you can have service no charge for free but when you call in and tell us that were like yea uh right then you get mad and makes things harder they have a tendency to say things to make sales

I have a copy of an email that a customer care rep sent me regarding my upgrade eligibility. The rep said that she contacted the store nearest me and they would help me get a phone at a promotional price. I will bring a copy of the email when I go to the store and we'll see what happens. I would still like it notated on my account though ....

if the computer says htat you are not eligable then you will have to pay full price UNLESS you have fullfilled atleast six months of your contract and payments have been on time, then you can do what they call an exception upgrade. you will be able to get discounts that way. as for the other comment, even though you are out of contract, a customer might not be able to upgrade for a few reasons, maybe the customer had some late payments, maybe they have had more than 50% of calls of network. there are many reasons they would not be able to upgrade even though there contract is up.
