Mandatory Area Code

VerizonGuy1

Does anybody know anything about the area code being required on every call on cell phones? I made several local calls over the weekend on my cingular v551, and it never even rang, it told me call could not be completed as dialed. Then i redialed with the area code and it worked just fine. Can somebody explain? Also, does anybody know if you can set the v551 to automatically dial the area code?

Thanks for the help

I have heard rumors, no facts yet, about all cell phones in the near future requiring to include the area code on all calls, including local calls… but like I said, I don’t have anything to back that up.

It is a fact all phones will soon be require the full number( area code included) because there are so many new numbers being created and not enough numbers to do it with with the current area codes. And no you can't set the phones to dial the area code for you because not everyone calls the same area code all the time.

Very interesting point. VoiP technology has some interesting repercussions on wireless. Vonage, for example, is VoiP and requires you to dial the area code. It also gives you the benefit of a "virtual" area code. You can make your line local to a place you don't even live. I bet they can do something similar for wireless.

Some may disagree with this, or say it aint so, but from the Kansas City market travelling in northern Iowa and Minnesota, I have run into situations where you also have to dial the "1" before the area code.

Go into your phone book and add the 1+area code to all of your numbers and you will be OK.

you have to mandatory dial the area codes, it's being required, since local number portability, means bothland and wireless numbers being able to be switched, so the area codes help determine what type of number it is when routed through a network switch.

That's odd...I work for T-Mobile and we've always had to dial the area codes with the numbers, and was previously informed all cell phones would soon have to use 10-digit dialing. However, if I'm not mistaken (I'll have to double check), some places are no longer requiring that anymore...I've even noticed that myself...There are several numbers here locally I can now dial without the area code...definately something I'd like to look into more....

well, i hope that this isn't permanent, because that'll be a pain in the butt to remember to dial the area code. and the reason I asked about the auto dial on the area code was because i used to have a sony ericsson t61c and it had a setting that allowed me to plug in an area code and it would dial it automatically

I live in a city where every number is ten digits, all the time. If you call from a landline, or a cell phone, it's ten digit dialing. As cities grow, this is the only solution, since multiple area codes are present in the same local calling area. You should get into the habit of ten digit dialing. It's only three more buttons.

Same here, ten digit dialling is second nature by now, and I get surprised by people who are resentful of the whole concept. Good grief, figure it out! There are so many areas that use the same prefix, heck, just 334 for TMobile alone can be a phone from Milwaukee WI, Seattle, Memphis, Portland OR, Philadelphia, Colonie NY, Atlantic City, Grand Rapids, Kissim...

In Nyc you have to use the 1+area code on landlines but some wireless carriers you can dial a number without putting the 1 before the number...but I have already gotten used to the 10 digit dialing so whatever. 😕

Don't have dial local calls as 10 digit numbers where I live (Shreveport, LA). But, I have all the numbers in my blackberry address book stored as 10 digits 'cause its only a matter of time.

I know that's coming in my area. We're getting a 2nd area code, so we will no longer be able to just dial a 7-digit number, whether it's a fax, land-line, or cell. Might be the same in your area.

good point with the 334 example. but the way it used to be here in the Fort Wayne, IN area since we only have 1 area code is that we just had to dial 7 digits but now my cingular phone is requiring 10, but our landline phones which is verizon does not require 10 digits yet

I guess in due time the 10 digit area code thing will be mandatory everywhere...At least that's the way it seems. 😕

It will have to be, the numbers can't be jacked around. For any given area code/prefix combo there are 10,000 possible numbers. 300+ million residents in the US, very few of whom have only one phone number, let alone all the millions of businesses. You can't have repeat prefixes for a given area code, and you can't have repeated prefixes for area codes that are even CLOSE to each other, or it will cause chaos. It's either mandatory ten digit dialling, or else we have to completely change the numbering system, which ain't gonna happen.

Kinda funny seems like us NYers have to dial that 1 before the area code. 🙄 It was a pain in the a$$ at first but now it just seems like second nature. Who would've thought? 😕

I always save my numbers with area code, so that way, when Im not in town my calls will always go through. I was told to do this when I got my 1rst phone. I've been doing it for yrs.
