iPhone Woes--REP HELP?

RUFF1415

You may want to brace yourself because this could be a long one...

I recently purchased an iPhone with the full knowledge that a $20/month iPhone data package was required to activate that phone's features. However, upon asking a local corporate store representative more about the exact requirements, I was informed that it was only required to keep the data plan for the first month (just to get the phone up and running).

Never keen on putting all my faith in one man's information, I returned home and did some research to confirm what I had been told...and from the innumerable amount of articles that did indeed confirm that info, I took it to be the truth.

However, after purchasing the iPhone from my local Apple store, activat...

Sorry to say but this can not be done. The visual voicemail uses the edge network and even though you were told wrong by a store rep which I am sorry about the iphone must have atleast the lowest data plan on it. At&t systems do random sweeps and if the iphone is spotted as the phone on the account then they readd the data plan on there even if a rep takes it off. I am not saying there are not ways around it but I am not going to cheat my employer out of that money.

As far as the Visual Voicemail goes, it can be restricted and the phone itself can have a regular voicemail box set up on it. I've already done it myself and it's as simple as calling your own number from the phone and dialing *.

Other than that, there is absolutely no need for a data plan seeing as the phone is WiFi capable (for a reason right?) and most users are never out of reach of an available connection these days.

It unfortunately looks like I will be returning the phone to the Apple store and taking the $40 hit for the restocking fee, not too mention the $50 I dropped in a protective case and anti-glare screen protectors.

In the future, I hope AT&T thinks long and hard about the repercussions of the deals they strike with o...

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe that AT&T will go in people's accounts readding features. That's unethical. I remember reading somewhere (engadgetmobile, I think) that it was possible to have an iphone without a data package, so Ruff, do a bit research, cuz I'm pretty sure it can be done.

I thought the very same thing, but upon every call to customer service I was told that it simply could not be done. And with the final call, the rep did indeed inform me that the AT&T system did an automatic search every so often for iPhone users, and whenever an iPhone was discovered on an account the account was automatically amended with the iPhone data package (despite whether it had been removed by the user previously or not).

This all agrees with the info that sbass had to offer, as well. I have done some more research and aside from personally removing the data feature through MyAccount on the AT&T website, it seems that it will not be done by any reps. And the add/remove feature for the iPhone data plan has since been removed from...

My guess is that if you re-read the stuff that you had to agree to when you activated the iPhone that it said something about the data plan being required.

I'm sure you're right. I'm sure it would have said something about a data plan being required. I was told the very same thing from a store rep...that the data plan was required to activate the phone. Not that it was required to be maintained. What kind of service is ever required to use the equipment you paid a full (unsubsidized) price for? I could understand if I had been resigning a 2-year contract for a data service...but the agreement was for the voice service only.

The simple fact of the matter is that Apple and AT&T are clearly not on the same page when it comes to whatever agreements and training they have between each of their respective work forces...and in the end the consumer is the one that ...

OK ILL SPELL IT OUT

when a customer buys an iphone its because of the features the iphone is capable of.

We as at&t reps tell you, "you are requierd to get the data feature for the phone to activate it and so you can use these functions on a 24 hour basis 365 days a year"

You as a customer hear " you are requierd to ger the data feature to activate it" which makes you think you can take it off.

my question to all customers out thier is...why are you going to spend $400-$500 on a phone that can do all these things and then complain about haveing to pay the monthly cost to keep using those functions you bought the phone for in the first place.

I understand your frustrated but thier is nothing you can do about it except return th...

No need to be rude. Trust me, if you go back and reread my original posting I specifically asked the sales rep about the data package and activation, if I would need to keep it, etc. I wanted clarification because I was going into the purchase with the intention of dropping the data plan. If I was told by the rep, after I asked for the clarification, that it was only required for activation (which is what I was told) then it's not on me, it's on the rep.

Also, feel free to check back to the original post and note that I said I didn't want to put all of my eggs in one basket with the information that one sales rep had given me. So, I returned home and did my own research to confirm what the rep had told me. Do me a favor and ...

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your iPhone, but to be fair, Apple regulates almost all of the iPhone's activations and upkeep. Try giving Apple a call and see what they recommend you do.

When you purchase an iphone thru ATT, its disclosed that you are required to add the data plan $20 / month.

Its not like they added the feature and you didn't know about it.

So whats the big deal? Why does everyone want something for nothing?

Just wondering.

It's not that. He's trying to say he doesn't personally need the data plan. It's understandable, but the phone still requires it.

Plain and simple. Yeah, it kinda sucks, but who said the iPhone would be a cheap phone to own? It's not. End of story.

If you really hate life, unlock it and use it with T-Mobile's network. It can be done with the new 1.1.3 with a software unlock. Sheesh.

Unfortunately, since AT&T repeatedly provided me with a dead end concerning my issue, I indeed ended up returning the iPhone to the Apple store to completely wash my hands of the mess it had created. I'm sad to see it go, but luckily enough for me Apple is very understanding/forgiving when it comes to the errors that had been made on AT&T's part. It appears as though, if you are in fact dissatisfied with AT&T's service agreement and not the iPhone itself, the $39 restocking fee is not assessed in the credit to your account.

Thank you, Apple...for being the responsible company in such situations. Lord knows it's a relief that somebody will be.

Thank you all for your help anyway! 🙂

It's a shame you had to return it. How do you feel towards att? has this tarnish the way you feel about it?
Gosh! I wish everyone would be on the same page! Me, being in telesales all, can't sell it.

Although I agree that it is a shame I had to return it, it hasn't exactly tarnished the way I feel about AT&T. I still admire their level of service and MOST business practices they display over those of other companies.

Despite the dead end answers I repeatedly received, for the most part CS reps were patient, helpful and gave accurate information. One error (on the part of the sales rep that I originally had spoken with) should not affect my opinion of an entire company, and it won't be doing so.

I just hope that in the future, when AT&T cuts deals with outside companies like they have with Apple...that they consider and value the situations they may be putting their customers in first and foremost. The iPhone is a great device, but ...

Hey Ruff, Have you tried the ipod touch? With the new software, it does everything the iphone does expect make phone calls and does not have a camera. My co worker is with another carrier and he wanted the iphone so bad that he was going to pay a ETF and pay at&t 24 more dollars a month (than his old carrier) but when he went to the apple store to buy the phone, he played with the touch and ended up buying it instead of the iphone. He is like you, does not need edge only wifi and he is very happy with his purchase.

Just my 2 cents

Hate to tell you Ruff, but from what I have seen from the massive amounts of Iphone posts and questions and issues, it would seem it is more on Apple's side in regards to that data plan being activated. heres my point:

1. Apple is getting $400 for the phone. No discounts.

2. The CUSTOMER has to activate their own phone through APPLE's itunes.

3. When the CUSTOMER activates their iphone, itunes forces you to pick whether you want the standard package for $20, the upgraded package for $30 or the unlimited text/internet package for $40. No where does it give an option not to have it.

At&t has very little involvment in MOST customer's iphone accounts. Why is this? Because Apple is getting the money for the phone up front, the act...

Well this customer did do his research, and when you're led to believe something from a store rep, it's easy to find that almost anything is "true" on the internet. I guess that's my lesson learned.

Google "iPhone sans data plan" if you don't believe that.
