ATT signal vs VZW?

VivaBeavis

I am currently a vzw customer of about 5 years, and live in southern New Jersey. Before that, I had AT&T on a startac phone, and my reception was the worst. People told me that vzw was more expensive but that the coverage was excellent. I made the move, and can honestly say that I have had no problems with reception since. I absolutely hate dealing with vzw's customer service, as well as the same old boring phones that are crippled. My cell is very important, and making and receiving calls is my top priority. I have been close to jumping over to AT&T several times, but the coverage isn't as good here. I get coverage in many places where a few of my best friends either get no signal, or they might get one bar that seems to cut in and out. Wil...

Well currently southern NJ looks like its covered very well according to att's coverage viewer on thier website... Ide say port your number, try it for 30 days and port it back if your not happy. I can say that here in Ohio ive NEVER had 1 drop call. Not once... Now if your friends are using and old samsung motorola or LG phone, dont take the coverage seriously. The phone really does make a difference. If you just need a phone(not a pda) get the nokia 6555b and im more then positive youll be impressed with the coverage.

I have seen the online coverage maps, and I agree that they look good. From actual experience though, I get much better signal with my vzw moto e815 than they do on a blackjack and an 8525, which I think is an HTC phone. My other friend has a generic moto flip phone, and I am unsure of the model. Although I do really need it to be a solid phone for reception, I would like to get something I could play with. I saw another user post about the nokia n95-3, which looks awesome. I guess since I have been beaten down by the vzw man for so long, I'd love to get something that I can have fun with. I really want to know if at&t is doing anything to improve their signal, not just acquire smaller cell companies. Thanks for the reply.

I just switched from VZW to ATT in the minneapolis/st paul region and so far I have noticed no difference in all the areas that I use it. The only real difference is on GSM the voice quality isn't as top notch as VZW, but still clear enough to carry a conversation

Do you think that can be solved with a better quality phone, or is it just the at&t service is not as good?

Well I think its just the difference between GSM and CDMA. I use a blackberry curve which is Supposed to have some of the best voice quality ATT has to offer. I am completely satisfied with ATT and my new Blackberry Curve. I don't talk more than 500 minutes a month so Its good enough for me

I'll take a little less voice quality for the choices and flexibility GSM carriers offers over Socialist "every phone is the same, we control everything" Verizon.

It's no wonder they use the color RED!!! LOL

i've noticed that anytime i use my at&t phone (any of them) and talk to anyone else on at&t or t-mobile that they sound fine. Whenever I talk to someone with Verizon or Cellular Souht, they sound muffled or like they are talking through a tin can. plus, where ...

AT&T is no better at returns. Some rep messed up my account and I can only upgrade via a call to CS or going to a corp store. The agent at the corp store was a _itch, so I left and ordered a phone via CS and didn't like it. The phone has been received for 3 weeks now and CS has told me that they show it received but I haven't gotten my refund back. I'm told that it will take anywhere from 30-60 days to get my refund. 😡

Thats a good reason to get your phone at Costco. You just bring it back within 6 months and you're good.

little less voice quality....???? it sounds like you have the phone in a wind tunnel ....flexibilty??? you still have no 1 year contracts and you cant change your price plan whenever you want, so WTF flexibility do you have slick???? your phones made out of rubber or something???

It is no wonder your company colors are orange like prison jumpsuits and blue like manic depressives.....especially after seeing what att sales rep get paid, I almost feel sorry for taking all your customers everyday.

Only you can make that determnation based on your needs. I could care less if I can get a signal in the middle of the woods as I don't find myself in those areas much. I have ATT and where I live there is a weaker signal but the advantages far out weigh a few dropped calls.

That said ATT allows you to pin point an exact area and will show you their signal strength on a street map. I can clearly see the weakness in my area. But they are putting a tower up as I write to remedy the situation.

I have never had an issue driving across country with ATT that I felt was intolerable. It really depends on your tolerance for issues verses the flexibility you get using GSM phones. Forme anyway its not even close.

The GPS on my phone does not...

If I do port my number to at&t, I will get hit with the etf from vzw. What happens if I don't like it and I have to go bac to vzw? If I do it quickly, say within a week of porting my number, I would think there would be no etf from at&t. Would I just be stuck with the activation fee, calls made, and tax? I think verizon has beaten me down enough that I am willing to take less signal or voice quality.

You have 60 days to return your number to Verizon and have the ETF waived. You will be charged for ANY usage on the ATT network but will not get an ETF is you opt out before th 30 day trial

Truthfully I'm just happy to have a phone thats battery lasts more than 3 hours. I can listen to music all day, push my email and talk from 8am to 10pm and still have a quarter of a battery with my blackberry.

I live in Central NJ(Jackson) and my experience with AT&T has been the best. I work for an AT&T authorized retailer and when I started working here I didn't beleive that their coverage was that good. I had recently signed a contract with VZW at the time and got a phone that was suppossed to have mp3 player capability and full bluetooth support (LG VX8100). To my suprise the MP3 player is completely disabled and no online website could give me a reasonable way to go around it. Plus the Bluetooth support was only for headsets and NOT for anything else.

As I learned about Cingular's service and their phones so I took out an employee line just to see what everyone was talking about. A friend gave me an LG CU400 so I used that and I was amazed...

I have a friend that lives in Pennsylvania and he doesn't get service in his house at all (he has VZW). He has to go outside also. I know people who do like VZW and i guess it works best for them. I have not personally tried VZW but I have had Sprint and Alltel....so coming to at&t has been great!!! Signal everywhere I go.... 🙂 gotta love it...choose what works best for you!!!! Good Luck!!!

Tell me about it. That commercial was way misleading. I hated the VX8100. 15 second video, altough a 1GB card is in it? WTF?!

Thank you all for the great responses. I guess my situation is the opposite of the one described by Rodimus Primal. I don't think I live very far from RP, but the vzw signal is stronger by a lot than my friends on at&t. I know that with vzw, it is the general consensus that moto phones get the best reception. Are there certain phones for at&t that get better reception than others? I guess I am thinking about getting the nokia n95, but I can't get that when I sign up. I will sign up with a new phone, maybe the LG shine, RAZR2, or Tilt, then have the nokia ordered. And Rodimus Primal, if you aren't that far away from me, I'd be more than happy to give you the business.

Nokia truly gets the best reception when it comes to phones. The Nokia 6555 is a great choice for something that gives a pretty good camera, bluetooth, music player and great Nokia reception. I also think Sony Ericcsson tends to get good reception too. The n95 is a great choice for an unlocked phone but you have to have the software updated to connect to AT&T's media net which to my understanding is pretty simple. MY store is in Jackson, NJ, same town as Six Flags Great Adventure.

I've used both services and I've worked for VZW for 3 years (not anymore) so let me explain this.

Me, personally, am not a huge phone person. I just need a phone that works, with a GPS, and a keyboard for SMS (once you go QWERTY keyboard you seriously cannot go back). When it comes to phone selections, I really couldn't care less, as long as it has those features I explained above. So lack of phone selection, crippling, whatever ... it's not a factor to me personally.

In terms of call quality, whenever I call from my CDMA device to a GSM device, the person does sound muffled sometime (but it's not a big factor, I can still carry a conversation without any major inconveniences), while when I call to another CDMA device, it's perfectl...

att cant give you reception any better than Verizon. AS a matter of fact, they cant deliver on anything BUT more handsets. VZW smokes them in dropped calls, smokes them in customer service and smokes them in employee training . So if you dont like VZW customer service, your gonna hate att.

But they have the iphone LMAO....most overhyped peice of junk ever.
