What Is Unlocked ??

Hi everyone. I am thinking of purchasing a new Blackberry 8310 or 8320 through a company called Colorware. It's a company that will color your phone for you. It's really cool. My question, you have to purchase the phone "unlocked", and I'm not quite sure what that means. I plan on obtaining AT&T service for the Blackberry. Can I buy either the 8310 or 8320 through Colorware and get service on At&T ? What information would At&T need from the phone ? The 8310 is an AT&T phone, but could I get the 8320 instead and activate it on AT&T (it's a T-MObile phone). Thanks for the advice in advance ...

An unlocked phone is one that is not tied to a specific carriers network anymore. Carriers will put a subsidy lock on phones to guarantee that you will use their service with their phone (while you're in contract). Buying an unlocked phone is fairly commonplace here in the states, and even moreso in Europe and Asia.

The one word of caution I have for you is to make sure it has both US frequencies (850/1900). Most phones you find out there that are unlocked lack the 850mhz spectrum.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I purchase the phone.
So, I can actually buy the 8320 and use it on At&T without a hassle ?

the 8320, if its a t-mo phone, it will require an unlock code from t-mobile.

If it is not branded (no t-mobile or ATT logo) you should be ok.

If it is unlocked, you will need to contact BB or ATT for MMS settings and email settings and SMS settings and all that stuff
