I was just told that AT&T does not do less than a 2 year contract. Is that true?

One year activations are still available but not advertised. Upgrades can only be done on two years unless CCare has a way around that, I know we don't.

You can still activate a new activation for either a 1 year or no commitment, but there are same changes over the 2-year. On the 1-year contract, you can get the same rate plans as the 2 year, but the phone is $50-$75 more than on the 2-year contract. You can activate a new line on no contract, but you pay full retail for the phone (unless you have one of your own) and while you can get the same daytime minutes and nights and weekends as a contract customer, there are no free mobile to mobile minutes.

So if I'm out of contract and want new phones, I can still do a one year contract and just pay a little more for the phone. Right?

People always cheat themselves like this. You're gambling. Why pay $150 more for a phone so you don't have to pay a $175 early termination fee IF you choose to leave?

If you're worried about the phones not lasting 2 years, there's something called an exception upgrade. After 6 months of service you can get 1 year pricing on the phone if you renew your contract, which only ends up adding 6 months on to the existing contract.
