Significant 3G rollout the week of Oct. 15th?

urmobilesky

There is rumor that there's expected to be a many regions launching 3G on at&t this coming week of Oct. 15th. Some cities that are rumored include Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Denver, and Oklahoma City. All of these areas are in need of 3G services from at&t and have been very far behind schedule for some time now.

Comments please.

Yes that is very true but in November they will be expanding more into places like Boston and others. They are having many delays because of some spectrum issues, tower issues, economics isn’t there, and more importantly, I think they want to put HSUPA and HSDPA at the same time and that makes a lot of sense.

Surfing on the internet on the beach that is very fun and I do that, except it is not very warm up here while down there it is great weather. I don’t know about your area and 3G, but I am sure they will come out with 3G if they see necessary. They obviously do with their tower expansion in that area.

We need 3g in the SC market. Verizon is killing AT&T with data cards in this market, and I am getting sick of waiting for AT&T!

I live within the city limits of Pittsburgh and have been anticipating the launch for quite some time. I can tell you so far that no 3G service has been turned on as of yet...but I'll be sure to return with any updates later in the week!

I live in central PA and we've been noticing some tower issues and yesterday we had about 45 call asking why they couldn't use their phones. when we asked which phones they had 90% said Syncs, CU500, Trax, Blackjacks, or V3xx. Could this be a precursor?

Usually when that happens there are some issues with the towers so they are just performing regular maintenance, however, I have seen when that usually happens it is the indication of a new offering coming through. What time was this?

That period as well as with nights (12am and on) are the times in which the carriers work on maintenance and upgrading the cell sites. I don’t know exactly what happened there, but just by you mentioned this issues that customers had, seems to me that there were issues with the cell site, which didn’t handoff properly to the next one, that indicates to me that they are upgrading the cell site and adding equipment to possibly bring in extra service and capacity. In this case, service would be the 3G, but it is hard to tell, as one would need more details before making any more conclusions.

our RAR said that we would experience alot of service issues when the transition goes thru. we were told the 23rd of Oct as our live date but the past two weeks we've noticed that phones are turning to 3G then back then nothing. an air card that I did the other day was in 3G for about five minutes then went back to EDGE again. this is similar to what happened when the iPhone came out and they were optimizing EDGE. we were also told that we would see a huge amount of SIM failures when the shift begins. most of the SIM failures are the older 64K and 32K cards, but some of the Cingular 3G are going bad as well. I hope we get 3G soon. too bad RIM hasn't come out with a 3G Blackberry yet.

Anyone who has used a Blackberry knows 3G doesn't mean anything for them. Enterprise will still be faster than 3G.

With knowing these extra variables, it is perhaps more likely that the 3G service is coming as they are doing what they call tests to see if they can handle the load and that conclusion is further by your ability to go from 3G first wait a few minutes or seconds and then go back to the EDGE. It is a way for them to test the capacity and coverage. Perhaps they were adding a few more t1s and extra equipment to handle this new service. You mentioned earlier that many people had no services or drop calls, and the only issue that with that is because companies usually upgrade and/or maintain the cell sites at very early and odd times that customers wouldn’t be affected by it in any way.

Yes, while I agree that it has been long overdue for cities of Denver's and Pittsburgh's size...I believe it was entirely a resultant of spectrum allocation. They had to wait to free up some of the spectrum used by the TDMA systems to reallocate them for HSDPA and flip the switch.
