Cingular service in NYC area?

So, the wife and I thinking about switching from Sprint and Verizon, respectively, over to Cingular. Reasons for the switch are plan terms (7pm nights, rollover, etc.), price (great corporate discount) and phones (much cooler phones).

The big question is around network coverage. We live in NYC and spend most of our time in the Tri-State area. Verizon seems to be the best service out there, but how does Cingular compare? Any difference after the merger w/ATT?

Any thoughts, reviews, comments, etc. on the quality/strength/availability of Cingular's network?

Thanks.

In Manhattan or around it? I've had no issues in Manhattan aside from the normal (elevators, subways, 80th story, etc) that every carrier has. I live on Long Island and it varies there, some weak some really good. The parts of NJ I've been in have been strong, same for the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn.

I had AT&T here and they weren't very good, so I doubt it would help the cingular service much. Verizon probably still has the best coverage in the area, by a good margin, but with rollover minutes, the cingular plans are much stronger, as well as the 7pm calling option.

To me it is good enough, not great, but what service is? It is passable and does the job. If I wanted straight up reliablity and signal strength and was willing to...

Actually, the ATT merger will only help the coverage for Cingular. When Cingular updates the ATT towers you will see an even bigger improvement. Cingular was just recently named best carrier in NYC... I guess it just depends on who you ask. I never have problems with my service when Im in NYC or NJ.

My wife and I switched from Sprint last week. We live in Park Slope. I work in midtown, she works out in Flatbush. Nokia 6230 and 3120. So far we've gotten better reception and noticably surperior building penetration throughout the city, even out on I-95 in CT.
