Is SE T637 the same on both AT&T and Cingular?
In other words, can someone with a SE T637 from AT&T migrate over to Cingular and not have to get a new phone? And do they give you a 64K chip when you migrate so that the phone can switch between towers?

Jagster,
If you want a Cingular anything (phone, rate plan, SIM card, etc..), it will require you to get a Cingular branded T637. Even though they are both the same phone, CIngular's goal is to get everyone off the ATTWS equipment.

But you can get the t637 unlocked and have it working on a cingular rate plan and SIM. I have an AT&T branded t616 working w/ my 64k SIM. You just need connections to have it done.

there is nothing stopping you from using any ATT phone that will accept a cingular sim card...
but even if its the same phone (T637) and its unlocked, and has a 64k sim chip...the service is still different. In most cases i'm sure its mostly negligible, but its still there. thats why cingular wants you to have a new phone from them.

I don't see much difference since you can send the GPRS & MMS settings via OTA for web access.

there should still be a difference in the selecting of towers even with the 64k sim card in it. especially in the areas where there are lots of cingular/att overlaps.
Especially considering cingular will be getting most all of their phones replaced w/ ENS versions, which the att phones are not.
I've just played with a few phones that we've taken back or have in the store from both companies...and with diff plans and cards...and i notice a difference in our store (which has weaker reception). but then again, thats not "extensive" testing (like we did with the V600 before we released it! haha)

The t616 and t637 (regardless of branding) is experiencing some issues with the 64k SIM. I've noticed it on both (used a t637 Cingular branded and t616 AT&T branded). The 64k SIM won't make a big difference if the phone is non ENS and the t637 will be discontinued soon because of the ENS factor.

hmm.. any phone without ENS is a no go for me. I live in an area with lots of AT&T/Cingulr overlap and it will make a huge difference if I dont have ENS. Without it, I might as well stay with T-Mo. How would a consumer know if a phone has ENS? Are they advertising that feature? Does anyone have a list of current ENS phones?

Everyphone being released going forward should be ENS. One of the reasons why new orders of the Samsung e317 are on hold. Had issues with the ENS version of it.
