Legacy Blue ATTWS customer - what are device options?

Blue82

Hi,

I'm a legacy Blue ATTWS subscriber that has a plan that is much better than anything Cingular/New ATT is offering. I've currently got a GSM device and ATTWS Sim. I'd like to upgrade my device, preferably to something that would allow email/web surfing etc. I've been told by Blue customer service that a phone that was sold by them (before the merger) would work if I put my SIM in, but they wouldn't tell me what that list included. I'm also curious about Cingular phones and also about unlocked phones. Anyone know what my options are for device and whether i could use 3G or only EDGE with a legacy Blue SIM??

FYI, I was told I could only add "PDA Connect" packages to my plan (i.e. 59.99 for unlimited).

Thanks!

Don't know anymore. I just started back w/ AT&T after a 14 month retirement from Blue. Before I left I could send out Blues fons. Even though we were told there were no more. We had a limited choice and supply. I also sent them 2 E-bay. Now that I'm back I'm Orange 😢 Glad 2 see still old Blue out there. If your told. If they say they cant tell you the "list". sounds like they have Fons. Good luck. I'll ask somebody in Blue on my break and find out for you.

They shipped out unbranded blue devices for awhile, but those are long gone now. The "list" is basically just any unlocked device or one labeled as at&t wireless from pre-merger. No store will have them, but there might be a few locked up in a warehouse somewhere.

I would search eBay for either unlocked or "at&t wireless" branded phones. The new ones branded as "at&t" will not work. As for your internet plan, there are still blue socs we can add to blue accounts. I don't know their prices since we don't actively sell them, but there should be more choices.

Thanks..yeah, I received one of the last of the unbranded Motorolas a while ago. Just wanted to confirm that an unlocked GSM phone would work with an legacy ATTWS SIM, as I've read different experiences regarding legacy BLUE's policy on unlocking phones versus Cingular/ATT.

Also, wanted to confirm that those ATTWS SIMs like mine aren't necessarily limited to a data technology (EDGE) and unable to use 3G on the network. I suppose it may fall back to whether the plan "pda connect" offered to legacy Blue customers is 3G inclusive or not.

Anyone out there running a PDA or smartphone using a legacy Blue plan to confirm?

What's going to limit you on 3G is the devices. If you get an HSDPA device that has our frequencies then you should at least get higher speeds even if not true 3G. Your biggest problem is going to be that even with the internet settings changed to ours you will not be able to download ringtones or shop from att's website. 3rd party vendors websites will work fine.

Blue devices will work because their ID is recognized by wireless.att.com. Unlocked phones wont be recognized.

Actually they did because b4 I retired that was all we had were Unbranded fons. There was a link someone had posted on the AT&T forums that allowed me to "flash" some not all but most fons to use it. I'll have to find it again.

Can unlock orange phones on orange accounts (well you can unlock blue ones too but that will not help us here). Those charter 99.99 unlimited blue plans that where offered about 4+ years ago are still around huh?

Data settings may have to be manually entered (or could possibly not exist for some devices with blue sim )and posted settings may not work with blue sims/setup... good luck

Side note: benifits lost att wireless
voice mail was covered in mobile to mobile on blue
billing for calls started before nights and weekends started where prorated for time talked during the day.

But overall rollover min made life easier on a lot of people so long as they pay attention when their habits change. *min#. New plans are at least flexib...

For all those in my position, if you log into the ATT website and view your account, there's an option to "Choose another phone/device" in the Phone/Device section. After clicking on that, you'll get a screen which shows all the legacy ATT wireless devices if you choose "Former AT&T Wireless" as the Network. Most of the devices I've used on that network without being unlocked are in that listing.

Hmm...I spoke with Blue CCA, and their advice was to search ebay for a Blue device, which they did give me a rough list of devices...basically anything sold by ATTWS prior to the merger (up to Treo 650s, BB thru 7780, and the audiovox and smartphone options). I was also told that the blue devices are technically different in that they use 2.0 GSM rather than 3.0 GSM networks, and that I wouldn't be able to use 3G or EDGE because of this fact...limited to standard GPRS. Sound right?

Thanks for the advice folks...seems like the consensus is that a legacy Blue device is the best bet for doing everything beyond txt and voice, and may be able to take advantage of 3G if a 3G device is used. Unlocked phones may be able to be configured for ...

I'm still a blue ATT customer. I buy unlocked phones all the time from ebay and Motorola. I have 4 lines on a family plan. There are plenty of unlocked phones out there. You'll be able to talk, text, and send multimedia messages with an unlocked phone. All of mine are quad band, by the way. You know you need the 850 band, of course. I just prefer buying quad band in case I change carriers or want to let a relative with T-Mobile use it later on.

Good luck! It's no big deal finding phones. Just don't expect to get one from ATT unless/until you migrate. ATT doesn't want to encourage people to stay on "blue" plans - understandably

I'm migrating soon to take advantage of the sharable unlimited text messaging for 29.99. Just can't dec...

Actually you don't have to migrate. Thats one thing that chapped my @$$ when I worked Blue was being told by custies that they where told "No more AT&T fons 😈 Yet I still sent them. I'm Orange now but I talked to one of my Blueco-CCA's yesterday and CARE can still send Blue Leg fons. They just try to migrate per policy. God help Orange if I can transfer back to Blue CCA 🤣
