Hi,
I'm a current Verizon customer who is getting ready to make the switch to AT&T for the iPhone. I had a couple of questions before I purchased that I was hoping some of you could help me with.
1) How often can you upgrade phones with AT&T at discounted pricing? I know Verizon was very strict with their 2 year upgrade plan and you could only get a new phone at a reduced price after 20 months and if you renew your contract.
2) Does the above apply with the iPhone? I understand that right now you can go out and buy an iPhone since there is no discount and get it activated on your account regardless of when you last upgraded your phone. Everyone is saying we'll see the Rev. 2 iPhone in 6 months to a year with new features and I'd like...

1. It depends on your monthly recurring charge. If you pay more than $80 a month you get a discount at 13 months. the other steps are 18 and 21 months. The longer you wait the more of a discount you receive.
2. They aren't discounting the iphone so you should be able to buy the second version whenever it comes out and sell your existing one.
3. What you should do is sign up with service and get a cheap phone with the 2 year contract and then buy the iphone after you have already activated your service. This will get you a better price on the secondary handset. I'm not sure how well swapping SIM cards would work I know there are some certain stipulations with the iphone sim cards.
...
I wanna add that if you're going to get a cheaper phone first and hang onto it as a backup, PLEASE get that phone from our online sales group. That way a sales rep wont get screwed out of the initial commission for the activation.
...
We were told by our RAE that at&t is charging back agents for this type of instance.

the iphone sim will work in other at&t phones fine it is when u put another at&t sim card in an iphone that was already activated you have a problem. if you want you can always buy a backup phone off ebay or you can buy a go phone from kmart or any other store that sells them and just pop your sim card in it.
...
Good luck with the iPhone and ATT but I'm sorry to hear you'll be losing America's Best, Most Reliable Network.

Welcome to the best ๐
To answer your first question, usually you have to wait till 75% of your contract is up (if I'm not mistaken), but it is true that the longer you wait, the better the discount. You also get more discounts if you're on a more expensive plan. I recently upgraded to a BlackBerry Curve, and I only paid $150 after rebates. Why? Because I waited for about 30 months (despite the fact I had bought several unlocked phones off eBay) and my rate plan totaled over $70 a month. If you go to a store pick up one of their information booklets and there's a chart in there.
Second, there are no discounts on the iPhone, and there probably won't be until anything newer comes out. In fact, there probably won't ever be a discount, jus...

What you said about Verizon is very far from the truth. They actually let you upgrade every year at a discounted price, not every 2 years. Even if you are on a 2 year contract, you can upgrade annually. This is in writing, and on their website. The "New every 2" program is the one you must have meant. This gives you the regular rebates/discounts, plus another $100 off. They have the best upgrade policy that I have seen and they offer insurance on every product that they sale. This cannot be said for every carrier(the one you switched too) lol ๐คฃ
...
You failed to mention that you can't annual upgrade on the $39.99 plan

You are right, the $39.99 plan is not in the policy, however, they will still let you upgrade annually, just by asking them. Everyone that I know has been able to. But, the point is, at least you have the option as part of the policy with Verizon Wireless, and at least everything is insurable. However, with AT&T, you get the benefit of rollover minutes. I have accounts with both companies, and I like them both. I wish Verizon had rollover minutes, and I will AT&T had Verizon's upgrade policy, customer service, and insured all of their devices like Verizon. But, like I said, I like both of these 2 wireless providers.

And just so you know there little guy, you do get an additional discount upgrading with AT&T at 2 years, just like verizon. ๐คฃ

Yes, at 2 years, little guy. The difference with Verizon, is that, at 2 years, you get $100 off, plus the rebates, with AT&T, you don't get the $100 off as well. Also, with AT&T, all of your devices aren't eligible for insurance. Also with AT&T, there is no policy that states that you can upgrade every year at discounted price, even when you are on a 2 year agreement. Before you call me little guy, use your little brain, and have your facts straight. lol ๐คฃ
...
And before you tell me to get my facts straight, check yours, our upgrade policy is almost exactly the same as yours now. So..... I wouldn't act like the end all authority on this one when you dont know obviously. ๐

Ok, let's do this. If your upgrade policy is the same as Verizon's, post the link from the website that states that. I know it isn't the same as I've spoken with AT&T store manager(s) and Customer care manager(s). So post your link, if this is true, and you aren't just spewing out bullSh&t as I know that you are doing. If it was their upgrade policy, it would be stated on www.cingular.com somewhere, and customer care/store managers would acknowledge it.

Still think I'm full of B.S. ? ๐

Actually, I stand corrected. The ATT Managers, and Cust Care managers weren't my friends, it was info for me as an ATT customer. However, the Verizon policy is clearly better, plus Verizon allows insurance on all of their devices. In this case, it is still not equal, Verizon is still better. However, your point about ATT at least having an acceptable upgrade policy is well noted.
"Youโre eligible for up to an additional $50 off our standard 2-year contract renewal discount:
If your monthly rate plan and data package charges are more than $99.00 per month and itโs been at least 18 months since your last upgrade.
If your monthly rate plan and data package charges are $69 - $98.99 per month and itโs been at least 24 months since yo...

And after a year, you may be eligible due to your MRC, you just don't get the additional discount spiff of 50 to 100 bucks.

Does the handset you have now with VZW have EV-DO? If so, if you plan on buying the later version of the iPhone, which should include 3G (God help us if it doesn't), why bother even purchasing the 2G iPhone? Six months to a year will come much quicker than you think.
