Possible to use non-Cingular GSM phones?

Am I free to purchase any 850/1900 GSM phone and then bring it to a Cingular dealer to sign up for a plan and activation with their SIM card? I don't find the current Cingular phone offerings all that exciting.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Yes. As long as the phone is unlocked, and has GSM 850, it should work. You might run into extra hassle setting up things like WAP and MMS, but that's about it.

In addition, it can be a dual mode GSM handset that is either for the Cingular Network or unlocked. Best to get a handset that is 850/1900 Mhz...so when your in a 850 system and you travel to a former DSC market that is 1900 your phone will be compatible for that GSM environment. 🙄
