2) yes, it does use minutes. In some markets, it wasn't always this way, but now it is.

Whether you do speed dial 1, or call your own phone number, your call gets redirected to a landline based voicemail service number, which is not considered a mobile to mobile call.
All your voicemails are stored on massive servers which are accessed via this number.
As of the time I quit working for Cingy 2 years ago, all customers' calls into that number (and the server number for the previous vm platform) were always billed as mtm. I don't recall how other markets/their vm server numbers were billed, though. I do know that mkt 35 was always a little different (it uses the crappy 1900 band, up until about 2 years ago, acc...

I looked @ some older bills, and through last summer my call detail showed calls to check vm as that number, but were billed w/ the M (for mobile) feature code. and verizon's crippled phones suck
And the fact that they are disabling/shutting down networks according to PRL Intrepretations also sucks. (Maybe thats why T-Mobile can claim more coverage than VZW)
The sim cards are awesome...no need to pay to backup your contact lists..or have them backed up on some seperate server. The backup is still useful..just in case you loose the sim..but with bluetooth file transfers..you could possibly do that yourself..for free.
