Yes on day one of the buyout at&t customers will be able to move to cingular phones and plans. I work in cingular customer care and we want u to move to cingular phones and plans. There will be no term fee charged if u move to a cingular plan. You will be charged your at&t wirelesss term fee if you cancel your service.

Um....we are being told in our direct AWS call center that AWS contracts are going to be in tact when the merger is completed and that no one will be let out w/o the ETF.

As always, these things can change at a moment's notice.

I think the thing to do is ask again after things are finalized.

The thing is people already knew that the AWE contracts will be intact after the merger. Both companies agreed to honor the contracts after the merger. Your statement seems to reflect on people who actually want to "cancel" their service and not migrate. The thing everyone really wants to know is if AWE customers can "migrate" day 1 or later after the merger, signing a new Cingular contract and getting on a Cingular phone/plan and not cancel their service.

There really shouldn't be any reason for AWE customers not being able to migrate. It will all be the same company, they're still getting the money. It would be basically like just switching plans with a few differences.

AWE customer can merge to Cingular phones and rate plans on day one...basically we will treat it as a relocation....they may choose phones and rate plans...we will just excuse the current AWE contract and issue a Cingular contract

🙂

I'll take your word for it. We haven't a bit of merger training here. But are being told indirectly that contracts are going to be honored, for cancellation purposes.

Migrating is a different story. My bad for not seeing that part of the question.

for cancelling - yes contracts will be the same.

for migrating - we will allow you out early to switch over.

my brother has ATT and after I told him about the merger, thought it would be nothing but good to switch to Cingular. My question is, is he going ot have to buy a new phone, or will he just get a new sim card?
He's not into phones too much just has one so he can talk to his girlfirend (family plan) without the land line long distance charges.
So thats my question, is he going to have to get new equipment. He has the Motorola V180, maybe, im not sure its the phone you get for free or for cheap. But its definetly a Moto and no camera.
Thanks in advance.

just stopped by the AT&T store, they seem to think he will be able to just get a new sim card.

Let me get this straight though. The 64bit sims wont fit into the 32bit sim slot, therefore making a 32bit phone "un-upgradeable" to the 64bit future? Or maybe fit in the slot, but not work?

I ask for my brother and myself, as I am buying out my Verizon contract and switching to either ATT or probably Cingular. Should I wait for the 64bit sims to come out before I switch or what? Thanks in advance.

It does not seem reasonable that ATT phones couldn't be used if we switch to Cingular. Does anyone here know the answer to this question? That would make a huge difference to people considering switching - I would think. Cingular charges way more than I would consider spending to "re-buy" my Nokia 6620.

If it isn't known for absolutely sure, I don't think anyone here should be advising people that they'll have to replace their phones. I'm guessing that there isn't a whole lot about the buyout that anyone knows for "absolute sure" at this point.

I do have problems roaming on ATT and T-Mobiles' network here in town. I have had both ATT and T-Mobile and they both work in my school, but Cingular for some reason doesn't. I think I might call them about it.

Like that would do any good though. 😛

The whole merger is still not finalized, no one can say 100% yet what will happen, so why not wait and see? 😳

if a AWE customer doesnt wanna merge right away they dont have too....we will still be providing the AWE service ...this merger of course is not a over night deal...it will take a while to get all awe customers on the care billing system...so if a customer wants to stay with their AWE phone for a little while longer they can...but eventually they will have to merge or go elsewhere

the 64k SIM's will be backward compatible with phones, but the phones will only operate at its designed capacity.

i.e. if you put a 64k sim in a non-ENS capable phone, it will still choose it's designated "primary" network (whatever "brand" is on the phone)

you would need a cingular phone to use a cingular plan from what we are being instructed. if you get an ENS-capable phone (one that uses a 64k SIM card) it will see BOTH networks as "one" network, for optimal use.

Nov. 1st is when we should start selling the 64k SIM's, and ENS capable phones will be available once the non-ENS capable ones are sold through.

yes - no term fee to switch.

no unlock codes - you will need a new phone, and will have the same options as a new customer

Yup.

You can REPLACE your AT&T contract with a Cingular contract. You don't get released from a contract merely for choosing a different rate plan.
