iPhone question

I am planning on switching jobs, and the company I will be working for has a discount program thru Cingular/AT&T. I already have Cingular, but they want me to have a separate "work" phone. They will pay for the service, I just bring the phone.

I was going to see if I could hold out for the iPhone. I guess my question is - does it have any business applications? I would be looking for basic stuff - calender, to-do list, etc. kind of like a Treo or the 8525 or a Blackberry. Will it also be able to do email? Does anyone have any insight into this yet?

Thanks!

It will have everything you are asking about.

In fact you get free imap email from yahoo with your iPhone. You also get REAL email not phone rendered.

once again, no corp email. no microsoft push, blackberry, or goodlink. deal breaker. this device will be a nice multimedia device, but for business people, we need a better pda device that will keep or businesses moving. not just a overpriced toy. i love apple products, but i'll wait for the upgraded version for adults.

for adults? thats an interesting choice of words considering I know plenty of adults that do not need nor want corp email, Microsoft push, blackberry or goodlink.

and overpriced?

I don't think, so are you forgetting its a flash video iPod?

Once again, I have NEVER heard Apple refer to the iPhone as a pda for business.

It will certainly have email functionality, but as to whether it can work with corporate email servers (& outlook) or just personal email is unknown. When you say "business applications", that's kinda vague, and what's worse, Apple has been vague about what functions it will & will not have for sure. Plus, there's still so much unknown about the operating system & available apps for it.

If they want the maximum amount of users to pick up this device, they'll make sure it's open to any email type. But right now, no one can say whether or not it would be equivalent to a Treo or Blackberry.

Thanks to both people who have answered. 🙂

Japhy - Sorry for the vagueness. I think what i'm looking for (or hoping for) will be a unit similar to a blackberry or a treo. basically, my predicament is to either wait for a couple months for the iPhone or go out now and get the Treo or Blackberry.

I will be using a corporate email server for my email, in addition to my usual yahoo and gmail accounts. i will also need something that will work with a calender program (like outlook or lotus notes).

What draws me to the iPhone is the space for music, which would mean i wouldn't have to take my ipod with me on the train into the city everyday. I also am drawn to the fact that iPhone will work natively with Mac OS X. Frankly, the...

lakers83400 -
Go with the Blackberry 8800. You wont be sorry. Best business device I have ever owned.
(I have had all Treo's, HTC's, Blackjack and BB8700)
As far as the iphone, japhy is correct. No one really knows. Any info from Cingular employees is coming from their own investigation and other forums or media. The public knows as much as employees, as Cingular has not released any formal training or specs internal or external.
