Hi, My family and I are going on vacation overseas this summer, and we wanted to get our cell phones unlocked. I was wondering how I go about doing that? Do i take my phone to a cingular store, or do I call customer service? Also, how far in advance should i do this? Thanks!!

Call customer service. They're the only ones with the codes to unlock them to go overseas and things like that. You can call them as soon as you want and set a date for when you want it unlocked. they'll either call you back or send you the code via text message around that date.

The stores are unable to unlock phones. call customer service and they can put the request in for the codes. it usually takes up to 2 weeks but if you are going this summer than tell them now and say your are going in a few weeks so they expedite things for you. you only really need to go to a store if you need to purchase anything. anything administrative like bill issues or troubleshooting/questions always call customer care first.

1-Make sure you have a world phone (quad-band)
2-Some phones will require you to have another carrier's SIM. So, you may have to find someone who has a T-Mobile phone.
3-Call customer service and make sure that you have the feature IRMA in your account (this allows you to roam overseas)
4-Bring us souvenirs 😛

Did you purchase the phone at full retail price? or did you complete your current contract? if you answered no the the previous questions then they wont submit the unlock request in clarify, i know i wont, these are policies straight out of CSP.

ask anyway, i had a customer that recently renewed and was travelling outside of the country and they still did it. it shouldnt be to big a deal if you havent completed your contract because unlocking it doesnt change anything as far as your contract is concerned.

That's not true. The policy straight out of CSP is outright purchase. At least 3 months in with good payment history, active prepaid account for more than 6 months, employee won handset. You do not need to finish the contract term to unlock it. BUT the one thing to keep in mind is that once a phone is unlocked it is not eligible for XBM, it must then go through the manufacturer for any warranty issues.
