Got a question for you Cingular folks out there.
Why when I do the *DATA# query on my phone am I being charged for one IM when I get the response.
I thought all *---# queries were free?
...
*services has not advertised this as part of the star services, so i guess they can do what they want...makes sense somewhat being that if you are checking this feature you already have a text package.
But, how do you know they counted it as one of your text messages? did you get a bill already and look through it?
...
No, I don't have a text package, and neither my wife, daughter, nor I use text messages.
When I got my bill this month I saw that it had jumped about $12.00 more than my normal amount, so I logged in to see what happened.
The first thing I saw was that Cingular has started collecting what they call a Municipal Gross Receipts Surcharge, which in Kansas City MO is about a 9% bump on your plan. They had a note on the bottom of the bill stating they were beginning to collect this charge in February 2007, so if anybody sees a bump in their bill this month, that's probably what it is.
I noticed that it had charged me for several MediaNet connections which I had used to set up the Ticker line on a V557 that I started using. I was under the...

Usually ten minutes can get you a credit. And if you complain enough they may just eat $12 for the Municipal Gross Receipts Surcharge if you claim you did not have prior notice of it. I don't even know what it is.
...
The *DATA# charge was only about $4.00. Since I'm not going to use it again and I'm leaving the Ticker turned off I'm not going to worry about it.
They have been collecting this new Municipal Gross Receipts Surcharge starting the first of February in Missouri. I don't know about other states.
What surprises me is that no one else has mentioned this in the Forum. It's an unexpected 9% jump on your bill. I'll just wait for some attorney customer to file a class action on them and see what happens!!!

If it's positiioned as a tax on your bill, it legally has to be a tax. They're not allowed to add onto it or disguise a fee as a tax. Which section does it show up under on your bill?
...
It is a city/state tax, similar to what is charged in many local markets nationwide.
Basically another way the government is using cell industry success to fund their social programs.
...
gotcha
It's funny how we finally repeal the "luxury tax" on cell phones and then just stick on different ones that end up being higher. Crap, what was the name of that tax we got repealed last year?
...
Excise tax?
That one was used to finance the Spanish-American war or something along those lines.
...
I think that was it. That would've bugged me all night.
...
It is a tax and I can say with certainty Cingular will not be eating any taxes.
...
I know they are not going to eat anything they can pass on to the customer. Note below however that they are not calling it a tax in the bill. It is lumped in with the Credits, Adjustments & Other Charges.
When you get to the last page of the bill below they say it is a tax imposed on Cingular by a municipality, and then say it is not a tax or government required charge.
I think I will inquire in writing from Cingular as to what exactly this charge is, who is getting it, and then I may inquire of that agency how this can be assessed, asking for a copy of the enabling legislation.
It's not like I can't afford a cell phone, but the extra charges are getting kind of ridiculous. It's like living in Europe and having to pay the Value Add...

That looks like the RCR and FUSF charges which are passed on to the consumer from carrier from the government, that no one is "required" to pay yet you have to pay it... odd things those.

i live in st louis, mo and we have this tax here too. it's funny cuz as far as i know, we're the only state paying it. I've seen an additional $45 on a guys bill from that tax. When he called CS they explained that the amount is determined by your rate plan as well as if you go over in any kind of usage! He had 5 lines and like $70 in overages from minutes and data. Needless to say, he was IRATE!

I think you guys need to be talking to your senators to see what the heck this fee is all about it.
...
It's a business tax that Missourians pay because cingular has to pay it. There is something in an article I read saying that it was deemed unconstitutional or something, but we're still paying it
...
If Missouri is collecting on a tax that they shouldn't, that's good reason for you to write your congressmen and say, "WTH!"
