MORE WCDMA!? Cingular is getting a great deal

AT&T Wireless just added new markets to its WCDMA. Any opinions on why they did this when they didn't have to?

Is this to make Cingular happier? I figured Cingular would be overlaying the current WCDMA areas with 800 WCDMA if that exists or will exist so I'm not sure what is going on here.

Umm, AT&T Wireless has contractual obligations that can still be broken if they don't continue UMTS expantion. Even after the merger nagotiations have to be put through between Cingular and DoCoMo about the contractual obligation. 🙂

They went beyond what they were contractually obligated to do, that was my point. They had to have WCDMA available in 4 cities by the end of this year. They had that done, now they have 6... two more than required!

ATTWS is going forward with business as usual. They wanted WCDMA in at least 7 cities by years end. DoCoMo had a contract for 4, but ATTWS wanted to roll out more.

As for Cingular, we want to roll it out on both GSM bands at the same time, or a close as possible.
