Are the dead spots in downtown Mountain View on GSM or TDMA?
I live in Palo Alto, but I'm pretty much traveling back-and-forth between Palo A., Mountain V., Menlo P. and Los Altos.

I used to have TDMA up until 2 years ago and it was pretty much awesome. Then I went to Verizon to get the V60c which was also flawless except for one big, solid black hole in downtown Los Altos, so last year I returned to AT&T, but decided to try out their GSM network instead, and I have to say that I'm pretty dissapointed. I've been thinking about going back to TDMA even if their phones are....bland. However, I've heard some people mention lately that even their TDMA net isn't up to what it used to be. (The reasons being anywhere from ATT not maintai...

Go with the TDMA, I know the phones don't have as many features, but until there are more GSM towers you will find that it has better coverage in most areas. Some of the new TDMA phones have some pretty advanced features & color screens, but no internet connection. 😉

THere are alot of dead spots on the At&t GSM network. especially in sunnyvale. the whole mary ave. street/area. is a whole big dead spot. their TDMa network is great. but not as great as it used to be. As they are continuing to grow their new GSM network, their TDMA is slowly getting weaker and weaker. The GSM Network is supposed to be done by early/middle of 2005. So they will have their current TDMA customers, swtch to the GSM network as they shut down their TDMA network. So if your thinking of gettin at*t as your mobile carrier, , make the right choice. GSM or TDMA??

It is true that tdma will give you better coverage for the most part and it is also true that tdma is getting weaker and weaker. the internal reason that we have been told not to tell the customers is that they have been turning down the tdma in most areas and turning up the gsm. in the future what will happen is there will be no tdma. they are slowly phasing it out or so our tech teams have been telling me. soon anyone on tdma will be forced to migrate to the gsm network and at that time the gsm will be were tdma is now. this is like when we moved everyone to digital (tdma) from analog (amps). digital sucked then too but now its the way to go. so there is a lil internal info that i have been told to never tell the customer. if anyone tells ...

I would say stay TDMA unless you feel you need internet stay away from GSM for about 12 to 18 more months. The thing you have going for you is that you are in a big market which is where they are willing to spend money. So it might be better faster then that. hope that helps.

friends tell me gsm is not a strong in santa clara... but the service is quite good in san francisco. cingular and t-mob have issues, and verizon frequently operates in analog(can you here me now?). att gsm i certainly better than these services in san francisco. the network difference make cause unique dead spots. you may, for example, haver great service on one network at you home, but poor service w/ the other. if that's the case, stick w/ the network that offers better service at you home, work, and any other frequented location. i don't think att will phase out tdma any time soon.
