He needs to sign up for another 2 year plan and then buy out to be able to get his number ported over with another company...

He can port over but not while in contract, well he can but will result in an early termination fee (duh), no need for new contract once his is up, if he wants to port at end of contract then do so, but will be responsible for entire month of service up until the end of bill cycle, and if he calls here into care to sob about it, we just refer them to the BIG PARAGRAPH on his Nov and Dec invoices, 🤣

Look for himself, actual notice: Information about Number Portability Beginning November 24, wireless customers in some markets may be able to switch wireless providers while keeping their current wireless number. So, if your friends or family want to switch to AT&T Wireless, they may be able to switch without losing their current wireless number. If we receive a request to transfer your number to another wireless provider, we will treat that as a notice from you to terminate service for that number. Although we will honor a valid request to transfer a number as soon as possible, you will be responsible for all charges and fees through the end of your billing cycle, including any applicable early termination fee.

Key words are " MAY BE ABLE TO"
and why would he have to pay an early termination fee if his contract is up? 🙄

He would not have to pay the ETF, as long as the contract is expired. BUT, he will have to pay for the remainder of the billing cycle the he is currently in. And it goes by when the port out request is finalized, not when he makes the request. While most port-outs are pretty quick nowadays, it can take up to five days, or more, to actually complete. (at least that the expectation I set with the customer when I talk to them about LNP)

That is really not what it is supposed to be. assuming the customer provides all correct infomration the port is supposed to take less than three hours, as stated by the FCC.

Welcome to the difference between expectation and reality... 🙄

Well from my experience I would have to say that since the turn of the year 95%+ of the port I have run have gone through with 24 hours and probably 80%+ have gone through with the three hour window that the FCC wants. Generally the only delay is a manual port or a landline port, as long as the customer has all of the correct information the port goes smoothly.

P.S. What is up with Cingular not having any customer service hours on Sunday's??? What a bunch of crap. Customer service should be 24/7 IMO.

Just to confirm, we're discussing AT&T Wireless, not AT&T (the large landline/broadband provider), right?

If so, assuming the number is eligible for porting (not all number blocks have been cleared for such; they eventually should all be, but some are not at the moment), then with AWS, you can leave at any time (sometimes with a penalty, however).

Have your friend call Customer Care and have them check to see if it is portable (yes, they should be able to determine this). Have him ask "Am I under contract right now, and if so, what caused my account to be under contract?". If he is out of contract, and eligible for porting, don't call AWS, call the other service provider and have them start the porting process. If you are under co...

they Do tell him it is eligable for porting BUT...he would have to sign up for another 2 years to be able to cancel his number...which don't make sense to me ...I am going off of what he is telling me that he was told be cusomer care.....

This is incorrect. There is absolutely no reason why the customer would need to sign another two year agreement just to turn around and cancel. I would say your friend was either misinformed, misunderstood, or both.

I know thats what I said to him...I could not believe that they would tell him this.....
I know I was not there so...for what ever reason it just did not make sense...
I feel he is not telling me the whole story....

yeah thats definately got to be misinformation. a contract is a contract and it doesn't matter if it's one month or two years, it's still the same etf. I work for cust care and there is absolutely no reason why we would tell a customer to extend for 2 years to port out. It doesn't make sense. Maybe they were trying to change the customers mind and they offered him a promo to extend for 2 years instead of porting out and he might of been confused. That's the only thing I can think of.

That's the same scenario I was thinking of - An attempt to save the customer in which the customer heard or understand it to be something totally different.

Who knows at this point....the bottom line is that we will NOT have to sign a new deal just to turn around and cancel and pay the ETF
