Can you read? Speak English? Or Spanish? Or at all?

I am beginning to wonder if any of these calls centres have any prerequisites in order to obtain employment.

I realize that this topic is overdone and has probably been beaten to death but I am frustrated and need to vent.

Can someone please explain to me how it possibly benefit mostly English or Spanish speaking customers to have representatives that do not speaking or understand most of the English (or Spanish) language. I don't care if you only have to pay them pennies on the dollar. I am absolutely convinced that the problems and anger they create cost the company a lot more in the long run.

Can you also explain how there can not be any sort of requirement to know how to read. I had an SST rep call me and ask me to opt out ...

Sorry I am not understanding your speaking English. Please eladborated this to me?

Hehe... just being mean... hope you get a, "oh haha you pointed out something I am bitching about now I am going to laugh and have a better day" moment. Please, if not for me, do it for the Gifford?

I just reread this before I read your comment and thought to myself, damn I wish I could edit my posts because I missed that (and a couple of other things) when I proofread it. 🤭

At least I can claim it was at typo and not my ignorance of the English language.

😁

BTW, who's the Gifford?

I believe he was going for, "Do it for the Gipper." As I recall The Gipper was a nickname for former President Reagan. Unless he's a closet fan of Frank Gifford's work on Monday Night Football. (John Madden kicks Gifford's butt any day of the week.)

I stated that because I think that name sounds cool, Gipper, hehe. I couldn't remember how it was stated and what it relates too. Now that I know it relates to Reagan or football, I think I will stop using it.

Yeah, I know how it can be, write a big ass post and make a few mistakes here and there in the vein attempt to make a coherent masterpiece of a rant to those willing to read the beauty that is a complaint against the customer.

Tis sure is fun making them thar people ROFL too.

Hey people in third world countries need jobs too. It's not their fault they work at jobs where they have trouble with the language. The real blame is on people who take advantage of those individuals by the amount they pay them, and the poor customer service that results all in the name of more money they couldn't possibly spend in their lifetime. Shame on them!

Yeah, they need jobs too, and personally I don't care that the company outsources either. People are mad at the language barrier, not the actually representative where English is their second language. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and be asked to learn a language, speak it flawlessly and coherently while explaining issues, AND get paid low wages. How is that fair?

Well the problem at hand is that the representatives knew they didn't fully speak English when they accepted the job. As far as pay, it's only menial when converted to US dollars. After the exchange rate they make 12.50/hr, which is more than I make. I feel no remorse for a rep who can't speak English. I didn't ask to work in Spanish because I don't speak Spanish; same principle.

People don't get paid 12.50 in India. 80% of the women there don't know how to read. I say the next time you talk to Oprah, Janet Jackson, or Avril, that you be extra nice to them. 🙂

Yes, after the exchange rate it equals 12.50/hr. The actual rate of pay is 3.25/hr US. After you convert that to whatever monetary form they have it comes out to 12.50. I refuse to be extra nice to them because they make my life hell. It takes all I have to even put up a nice front because I know they just told a customer something completely off-base and that I have to clean it up.

Thats not true. India reps are actually fairly well educated. I suspect that they are on average more educated than the American and Canadian reps.

And they are paid very well for where they live. There wage may be far below poverty lvl in USA but in India their wage is very good wage.

Its unfair to compare USA cost of living and acceptable wages to Indias cost of living and acceptable wages.

Don't compare Apples to Oranges or Cingular to Verizon!

that's about the same thing I got as well when I started here. although trainings for other things since then have varied, like 3-4 days for GSM update training for the new siebel, or 3-4 hours training for orange XbM systems, etc. so there seems to have been a big change between when I started and now. I have people sitting a few feet away from me that had training for orange XbM stuff also, and their training was for a few days, although they were changed from activations to warranty, instead of a lot of people here going fr...

or for that matter, the BEUC warranty people, who suddenly had warranty thrust upon them with absolutely no warranty training. and we are still reaping all manner of crap and lost money to that, because there are all manner of things that they are exchanging for that they aren't supposed to, and a lot of them are not aware that there are situations that even their customers are supposed to be charged for. I have resorted to just training them one at a time as they call me.

Even after the issue has been completely rectified you still insist on making yourself look like a jackass publicly. Has anyone ever pointed out your complete lack of common sense? If so, did you then or do you now, have the mental faculties to comprehend what they were saying. It's obvious you're poorly versed in the English language, which I'm sure is a constant obstacle. One has to wonder though how you were hired. I had always believed basic literacy to be a manadatory skill for this job.

I'm simple but you can't even think of a rebuttal. Don't think I don't know you're just trying to back out of this with some coy little, "All I can do is laugh" routine. The only simplistic matter, aside from that which resides between your ears, is that you falsely accused me of trying to call someone a racist. Now you're simply skirting the issue rather than admitting to your mistake and moving on. Oh, and please don't waste my time with the "I wasn't even talking about you" excuse. If you can compile a coherent answer I'd love to hear it, if not, well...I won't say I'm surprised.

How exactly am I making an ass of myself? I've pointed out the many flaws in your statements and resolved a miscommunication you merely attempted to make worse. For the icing on the cake, even after the comment was explained you continued ranting on about my "accusations". Jesus man, you screwed up, how hard is it to admit that? Unless of course you're one of those with such low self-esteem that having to admit you were wrong yet again, because I'm sure it's a frequent occurence, would simply crush you. Either way it's just pathetic. I'm finished now because idle bickering solves nothing. Have a nice day. 🙂

This reminds me of a rep I spoke to a few days ago. She stated that she was happy to speak to a "good ol american boy" because the other day she got some (racist word) from another country and they don't speak proper English at all. I then told her that I am from Canada 🙂

When she said that I speak pretty good English for a foreigner I stated that both our countries were settled by the British, who speak English.

When she asked me the main differences between our countries languages, I said in the words of John Clease the British comedian "we speak English and you don't"

I know that was harsh but some people just get on my nerves, espically when they start spouting profanity.

One thing that some people do is say the word AXE. ...

Canadians don't speak "English" per se either. You speak your own Canadian form of the English language the same way Americans speak American english. It's called dialect. A Puerto Rican native and a Mexican native, although both speak Spanish would have a hard time communicating due to said dialects.

Here is a question for everyone.

I have a friend who is from Newfoundland and she applied for a job here. Well they turned her down not because she didn't pass the tests or do well in the interview. They told her the reason is because she is from Newfoundland and has that sterotypical accent. They said that no one can understand her.

I honestly went and checked with HR and they told me that we have to keep the impression that we are in the states, and no one will ever believe she is from anywhere but Newfoundland.

What do you think? Is that a valid reason to deny a job?
