Switching to AT&T/Cingular - Questions?

I'm switching to AT&T/Cingular when my contract expires with verizon (Nov. 11). My question is should I wait until everything is done with the merger before I make the change? I can't wait to switch and would do it Nov. 12 if everything works. I've also heard rumors that the merger will bring a bunch of cool new phones. Is it worth waiting a month for the new phones that may come out?

Which leads me to my second question. What are the current opinions on "porting" you current number over. Are there any Pros/Cons about it, besides the obvious that you get to keep the same number. Any connection issues, etc, etc.

The main reason I'm switching is because most of my family and friends are with AT&T so it just makes more sense for me...

The cons of porting that I could think of....if the reps do not put the info in correctly then it could take a day or two before it goes through, basically until someone corrects it. If all goes smooth I think you are without service on your phone. For example on 1 phone you can only make calls while the other phone can only receive. So might have to carry both phones around till goes through. I would suggest waiting till everything Cingular comes out with AT&T just because it is possible that if you sign up now a few months down the line if you want a new phone or plan that you may have to buy a Cingular phone and get a different plan. So you might want to wait till you can just go right into Cingular. But if you sign up now and get AT&T's ...

So does Cingular offer Mobile-to-Mobile as part of there plan as well. Or should I jump in while there still AT&T to get that. I couldn't understand by your last post what you meant.

The more I'm reading about this merger the more I'm getting nerveous about switching to AT&T. I've heard both good and bad, but most of all I've heare that AT&T will be "no more" and Cingular isn't all that reliable.

My main worry would be 2 things really:

(1) I switch now with AT&T and then find out after the merger that the service went to pot, I have to get a new cell phone, and cingular would raise the rates, etc.

(2) I wait to switch and find out right before I'm switching to 'now Cingular' that I would have been better of to switch while ...

my suggestion wait till Nov. 15th...new phones, new plans, and nation wide m2m to 42 million customers.

I wouldn't do at&t becuase you're eventually going to have to migrate to cingular, eventually, anyway.

The best thing to do wait till nov 16,2004

With the "Day 1" date still nov 15,2004 there is no point signing with ATt,after nov 15,2004 No more ATT branded phones will be produced at all, whatever stock there is will be sold till fully depleted then no more pohnes, so if you buy a phone now then 6 months need new phone, would have to migrate onto cingular plan or be **** out of luck

best to wait until after nov 15,2004

Thanks I didn't realize it was that close anyway. Thought it would be Dec. or Jan.

Anyone know what (if any) new phones would be available. Are they going to be released Nov. 15 or like in Jan. sometime.

That's the other thing I'd be curious about...

Thanks,

Gary

well same type of phones that att has now, with the cingular brand logo on it,but the major other difference is that they will use 64k sims which only work in cingular phones so they cant work on att services so the great phones att has always had but cingular brand and sim so best to wait till after nov 15,2004

No they will be the same type of phones as Cingular uses. Some of them are the same as AWS but not all. Plus they are expected to launch a bunch of new ones.

Ok, Well I guess I'm waiting until at least the 15th then. 🙂 Thanks for answering my questions.

I know this is a biased forum, but in your opinion how does AT&T now Cingular compare with Verizon which I will be leaving.

Good or Bad, I'd like the feedback. 🙂

Thanks,

Gary

Generaly speaking it depends on where you are. In the Big citys is generaly where AWS/Cingulars GSM really shines. It was designed for high density populations like in the EU as it is able to get through building interferance much better than Verizon's CDMA. But on the flip side the CDMA have a longer ranged signal than the GSM (there are technical reasons for this which are too long to go into right now) so it does require more towers once to cover the same distance which does make the CDMA usually better in some of the central west states that have a lot of open country. These are just generalizations about the service. For a better idea of how it will work in your area then let us know where you plan on using your phone.

I'm in Colorado Just north of Denver around the Ft. Collins area. There are some open country spots and that is what I'm concerned with a bit.

Thanks for all the help.
