Merger decision just days away

The official word on the takeover by Cingular appears to be just days away, according to a statement on wirelessweek: http://www.wirelessweek.com/index.asp?layout= document&doc_id=136243&verticalID=34&vertical =Business+and+Finance&industry=

With the decision, what kind of immediate affects will AT&T Wireless customers first see? Hopefully we have access to more phones and rollover minutes shortly after the word is announced. Hopefully we see what is advertised on the site concerning the joining of the two companies: www.newcingular.com

As everyone says... Nobody will really know anything until the merger has actually happened.

AWS just upgraded their OCS by upgrading security. This is one small indication that the merger may be going thru sometime soon.

My vote is for Cingular to leave my beloved ATTWS alone.

If ccingular doesnt purchase attws as it is now, then attws will lose the name back to AT&T. We would then be a no name company

Huh? Your saying that if the Cingular/AWS deal falls through and Cingular doesn't buy AWS then AT&T will still get the AWS name? That's not true. AWS owns the AWS name. But cingular is not buying the name so that name defaults back to AT&T. If Cingular doesn't buy AWS then AWS keeps its name and buisness goes on as normal.

AWS doesn't OWN the name. They have an agreement in place with AT&T that allows them use of the name. This can be revoked at any time.

they bought the name, thats why it's AT&T Wireless...and AT&T Long Distance, etc. they are all different and all own their own name

They didn't BUY the name. If they bought the name why did AT&T threaten to take the name back less than 6 months ago when AWS was having a lot of customer complaints.

Also this is directly from AT&T's web site:

I'm confused. Are you saying AWS ownes the name or not. This post doesn't have anything to do with the name. Everyone knows that AWS is privatly owned by its stock holders. You are technicly correct that AWS doesn't own the AT&T name but as part of the sale agreement they were able to retain the name. I don't think the details for that agreement are public but if Cingular did not purchase AWS then AWS would still retain the AWS name.

When Cingular closes on ATTWS they will have 6 months to to use then name, during the rebranding transition period. After the 6 months ATT parent corp gets the name back. ATTWS used the ATT name as part of an agreement, maybe they lease it it pay for it. When the 6 months are over it has been rumored that parent ATT will enter the wireless game using the attws name as a MVNO for the Sprint network.

I'm saying that AWS does NOT own the name. They have an agreement with AT&T for use of the name. If the Cingular merger goes through the name is revoked in 6 months. If the merger doesn't go through then they'll still be called AWS unless AT&T revokes that agreement.

I believe the term that AWS and AT&T corp are using is "Defaults back" to AT&T corp 😛 But i'm sure it is pretty close to the same thing.

And why wouldn't my opinion matter? Is it even a matter of my particular opinion? I just don't want to see ATTWS go the way of the dodo. I like it as it currently is. Is that a crime? No. That's okay though...I'll just keep answering your very inconsiderate posts with a calm demeanor and a little bit of class. Maybe Rich will just eventually get fed up with you outright and delete your membership. Then a lot of folks on here could breathe a little easier and not fear retribution for their honest opinions.

I agree with you 100% muchdrama, about that AT&T has been a good company in the past and has been innovative in many areas. Hopefully we see that continue, as both AT&T Wireless and Cingular have strong roots...and now we look to the near future, and time will tell if we see new products introduced as the takeover is announced.

Hopefully we hear some news at the end of this week or sometime next. Let's keep out fingers crossed for an even better company with more of a focus on a "leading" the nation's largest wireless provider...Cingular 🙂
