iPhone 5S unlock question

I have an ATT iPhone 5S that I unlocked, same model number of the Verizon iPhone 5S. But when I go to activate it it says 'No Service' and it won't allow me to activate online either. I'm just swapping my nano SIM from my Droid Maxx to the iPhone 5S, I figured it should work. Thought that was the point of the iPhone 5S being the same across most carriers here in the US.

The nano SIMs used in iPhones are not compatible with anything other than iPhone.

Then there is the question of the CDMA portion of the phone likely being locked to the carrier's own network as well as preferred roaming lists. You may want your phone to choose whichever signal is strongest regardless of network but Verizon wants your phone to choose its network over Sprint's because they would prefer not to pay Sprint a roamIng fee for you straying onto...
