Finally paid my balance. Does that mean Verizon will reactivate my service with the same number?

Anyone know?

Here is a crazy idea. Call Verizon and find out straight from them.

If they suspended your number then paying your balance off should get it reconnected automatically. If your service was disconnected for non-payment you need to call them and try to get them to reconnect service with that number. But...didn't you port your number to Google Voice or was that another poster? If you ported your number to GV I would NOT port your number back to Verizon. You can have GV point your GV number to the new Verizon number. Seamless.

Sadly I didn't do it in time. I did call and they did confirm that I can resume service with them but I'd have to start fresh. When I inquired about getting the cellphone number back they said since the account was shut off for awhile it was released into the pool and a authorized reseller snagged the number (Whatever that means) and I'd have to get assigned a new one... I think I am going to try out ATT and see how much luck I have with them

Authorized reseller in the context of a phone number usually means an MVNO, or virtual operator. Like PagePlus. I do find it odd that your number was reissued so quickly, but nothing's impossible there.

I don't think anything. I was merely stating what was offered to me from Costco. I found out where my number is some company called: NEW CINGULAR WIRELESS PCS, LLC - DC....So essentially that number is gone unless I can contact that company and see if they can get it back.

All phone numbers are assigned to ONE phone company that "owns" those numbers forever (FOREVER). I've been around here long enough that I seem to recall that you were indeed a Cingular customer originally, right?

If that's the case, AT&T still "owns" your number, and will forever. There's a big misconception out there that "number portability" is the same thing as "number ownership transfer."

It's...

So when/if I decide to restart service do you think ATT would even know if that number is available?

I would add to what CellStudent said (keeping in mind what you've said about your number in this thread), that the number has likely been reassigned to a current AT&T customer. If the information that indicated it was now with CINGULAR (which is AT&T) said the number was PORTABLE, then it's probably active with someone else now. You need to make sure of this, and the easiest way is to call AT&T and ask.

Sadly I asked and I get the standard answer of "The numbers are automatically generated." Should I call be calling customer service or sales?

Well good news...Well sorta. I ordered my new phone with ATT, did manage to find out that my old number was still available. Apparently what I have to do is when I get my new phone call customer service, and request a number exchange. Not sure if they'll send me a new SIM card but whatever its all good I get my old number back

See you guys around
