Check with VZW and see if you're really "disconnected" or just "suspended." Any call center agent can answer that for you, no need to call the retention team.

If it's just suspended, you can port the cellular number out to Google Voice for something like $20, I think. That way, you can keep the number forever. Google Voice doesn't have any monthly fees, so they will never throw you under the bus when times get hard.

The side-effect is that porting out to Google Voice will permanently disconnect your VZW account, so you will be billed an ETF at that time, if applicable.

But that was going to happen anyway if you let the account lapse completely, so what's the difference?

Note: This is exactly what I did with my wife's cell number when I quit my job at Verizon a few years ago, so I know it will work for you.
