Verizon service in Puerto Rico

Matt_a

We will be on vacation in Puerto Rico very soon, and I was curious about VZW service while on the island. I called customer service and they basically said that we can use our phones exactly as if we were home (PR is a U.S. territory). She said there would be no roaming or international charges. Of course all of this depends on if we actually can get a signal.

Can anyone here verify that I was given good information? I really don't want any nasty surprises!

Never heard of idial. What is that? I don't mean to insinuate that you're wrong, but what are you basing that information on? It completely contradicts what VZW customer service told me.

I got the rates from VZW.com

Type international on the search>>choose international long distance>>>Select rates & coverage in left panel, under traveling outside of U.S.>>in the drop down to the right, select Puerto Rico. Click go.

The information you've been given here is partially incorrect. From Verizon's FAQ on Puerto Rico:

"Most of Puerto Rico is included in the Nationwide and America’s Choice Coverage Areas. If you roam out of the Nationwide or America’s Choice coverage area, you will be charged $.69 per minute. Please use your device's banner as an indicator of your roaming status. Click here to view the approximate coverage areas."

So as long as your current plan says "America's Choice" or "Nationwide" in the description, you have normal coverage in most of P.R. In fact, the network you'll be using was built and maintained by Verizon for many, many years. You still have regular coverage there.

The 69 cents per minute is a generic inside the US roami...

The International Dialing feature is only needed when traveling to countries that don't use standard North America 10-digit dialing.

Canada, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and the Bahamas do not require the International Dialing code, but Mexico does.

It's based on the dialing pattern needed to connect the call, not the the form of government selected in the target country.

Puerto Rico is $.69 per minute according to Verizon's website. It does appear that even your run of the mill CDMA 1x phone will work there.

RIGHT.

I think the smart ash comment was directed to Jarahawk, who they were replying to.

I'm constantly surprised by how often Verizon employees get the P.R. thing wrong. I guess we just don't look at the coverage map any more (the one in the brochure), which shows P.R. with Hawaii and Alaska. We don't mess up Hawaii and Alaska, but maybe that's because they are states. P.R. is the red-headed stepchild of the US, apparently.

You mean at Phonecan? I was getting far too much spam to keep it up. I'd get about 50 registrations per day all from people who looked like they were using spam email accounts. If I could get around that, I'd have it back up.

Yeah, that was directed at me. So thank the guy for parsing through Verizon's coverage map. Obviously, I didn't pay close attention but merely posted the link and a mistaken interpretation. My feelings aren't hurt. Enjoy Puerto Rico and do everything that I wouldn't do.
