Theres lots of Smart@$$es here lol.
Heres my 2 cents:
I have the Droid 4 personally, so I run the same software version and use the Moto overlay just like the Maxx. The ONLY reason I have the Droid 4 is because I love having a physical keyboard, but thats my own personal preference. As you may know, the Droid 4 also has a non-removable mattery, which I've had no issus with. If for some reason I deam it needs to be reset due to glitches or whatever the reasoning, pressing and holding the Volume Down and Power button does a reset much like a battery pull. Maxx is the same.
Samsung isnt my favorite manufacture. I cant deny that the Galaxy III has some impressive specs, but I'm still indifferent. I was impressed with the Android 4.0 on the Nexus, but I wasnt impressed with the phone itself. The Galaxy lineup over the past few years hasnt been my favorite either. I also live in a area with marginal service(Montana) and I have also seen service issues with Samsung in the past.
All in all, you have narrowed it down to two awesome phones, so either way I'm sure you would like it. In saying that, I would still lean towards the Maxx.
An that my Sir, is my 2 cents. With minimum sarcasm lol...
Hope it helped
