It's not just that I can't get real white pixels on an AMOLED, it's that even when you try, it kills the battery about 4x as fast as an LCD does:

AMOLED is a terrible, terrible choice for an Internet consumption device because THE INTERNET IS WHITE. I use my phone primarily for browsing simple websites and Google Reader, and even with the 2200 mAh extended battery in my 4" AMOLED smartphone, I have to recharge it every 6 hours.

I used my wife's Droid X for a full day once, with the stock 1380 mAh battery, and lasted 14 hours before a refill! Almost double the life out of about half the battery, on a larger screen!

AMOLED in a smartphone is a sin against reason. AMOLED needs to be reserved for devices like TVs and desktop monitors that are plugged in all day anyway.

Crappy engineering, Samsung. The quality/size/price/power compromise was not well thought out in South Korea.
