Not true, unfortunately. I contacted Verizon about this. They told me that as long as you make no changes to your plan, you keep unlimited data. But as soon as you make any changes, including buying a new phone (which extends your contract), you are forced to go into the tiered plan. I posted my email exchange with Verizon in the comments to the article that Phonescoop posted.
