They're just not desperate for it. They won't sign a deal like ATT made to get it. The iphone pretty much IS their network. Verizon doesn't have that issue with a flagship phone. Of course it would sell well, so Verizon is open to it, but it won't just be up to apple to decide the terms.

On top of that, all Apple has to do with ATT is tell them that talks are going well with another carrier and ATT will bend over even further.

I see ATT getting a renewal deal after bending over because Verizon shows moderate interest. The Apple will pay Verizon for pretending to be interested long enough to strike a better deal with ATT.

Att is diversifying the ol' portfolio so they are not dependent on the iPhone. Att has the most operating systems and will continue to have a tech advantage over Vzw until they get new leadership. Have fun with limited tech and limited options at Vzw. I'll be checking out the WP7 phones on the 8th and enjoy even more options.

That's like saying Google has diversified their portfolio because they have 2500 different projects they're working on...

AT&T is critically dependent on Apple to maintain it's smartphone market share, "other options" or not!

I'd like to know what percentage of AT&T smartphones are NOT iPhones.

Especially since they sold 5.2 MILLION iPhones in third quarter. I'm sure they're trying to diversify their smartphone sales, I just don't believe they're very successful at it, or trying very hard. They're not going to refuse to sell an iPhone to sell a Torch - that would be ludicrous.

Tech advantage? So you're getting LTE by the end of the year too, right?

And yes, Azeron, that's all I'll say to him. Ignorant trolls are useless. Smart trolls are at least entertaining.

Because Epik brought it up:

ATT said that 25% of their iphone sales came from new customers.

They had 5.2 MILLION iphone sales. This means that The number of new subscribers they got from the iphone was 1.3 Million

They only added 745,000 net post paid customers.

What does that tell you?

Sounds like they churned over a half million customers. Hmmmmm... Better keep that iphone exclusive and keep selling iphones.

AT&T does have the phones, actually too many which can overwhelm certain customers.....but AT&T has to have something to compensate pricing and the buggy network

I'm pretty sure that Jobs doesn't WANT another deal with AT&T. First of all, they haven't gotten along well, and second, AT&T exclisivity limits their ability to sell even more iPhones. They would make even more money by making it available to more carriers.

Sometimes I wish they would just make the phone available to every carrier, big and small, and be done with it. Then we can all go back to bashing each other's carrier. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Between the FCC and the market, it just might happen! I'd love to be in a reality where I can buy my phone from HTC directly, or through Best Buy, and THEN chose which carrier I use it on.

Oct 22, 2010, 3:07 PM
It actually doesn't. There is no way AT&T could give enough money to make up what Apple could make by selling its product to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. Besides, FCC already passed a law stating that All phone had to be made usable by all carriers. Exclusivity is a thing of the past. Now it will just boil down to who has the best service, customer service, and prices.

First, the FCC doesn't make or pass laws. The constitution designated Congress for that. The FCC is tasked at regulating within the limits set by Congress.

And for the record, the FCC ruled that manufacturers couldn't do anything to prevent someone unlocking a phone for use elsewhere. They didn't rule that phones have to be usable by all carriers, as the FCC has no power (at this time) to dictate to the wireless industry what technology or which frequencies are used in a phone.

While it is technically illegal for manufacturers to lock phones, the ruling is not enforced at this time. I'd suggest calling the FCC and telling them you want your Verizon iPhone now.

Good. I cannot imagine a manufacturer being told it had to include antenna for each technology. The fact that there are people who think the Feds SHOULD do so is downright scary.

I agree. I think the market needs to determine that, and in many ways, I think it has, given the overwhelming support of LTE. For AT&T it's a logical transition. For Verizon, it's improved phone selection, supply, distribution, and it keeps competition simple. In any case, it's more of a win for the consumer.

Verizon already rejected Apple in the first place. They refused to carry the iPhone because of the restrictions Apple placed on the product.

And now that Verizon has been doing well to keep up in smartphone sales and android is the primary choice for new smartphones they do not need to sacrafice what they feel to be core important issues when bringing a handset to their network.

And, despite AT&T having the iPhone, they still haven't caught up to Verizon. AT&T and Apple thought they'd surpass Verizon. Well, now that Apple has had to "deal with the devil" they are ready to explore other options. But, it's AT&T arrogance that has put them in jeopardy. Now they just keep shovelling BS to their sales force, but anyone that can read the signs will see what's comming. And wether the iPhone goes to Verizon or Sprint, AT&T losing exclusivity is going to hurt them whether it happens now, 2012 or 2013.

If Alltel were still around, Verizon would still be #2. AT&T would still have a considerable lead. I'm sure someone will be shocked that a Verizon person is using that old AT&T argument on the Verizon forum, but you have to remember that the iPhone magic started before Verizon assimilated Alltel to be #1. Without Alltel, Verizon would have had a lot of ground to make up to match AT&T today.

Good point, but Verizon OWNS Alltel. AT&T doesn't OWN iPhone. Verizon won't be losing Alltel. If we want to carry that farther, what would Sprint be without piggybacking Verizon?

For all intents and purposed, Apple "owns" AT&T.

My point was this - Verizon became the #1 in number of subscribers after buying Alltel. AT&T has been adding new lines hand-over-fist because of a simple phone.

I'd have to give props to AT&T for agreeing to the Apple deal and sticking to it, adding who knows how many millions of people all looking for one simple phone. It's a brilliant move, when you think about it.

Verizon, on the other hand, acquired a large chunk of customer base, no phone involved. Good business sense, certainly.

Oh, no doubt it helped their business, but at what cost? Verizon would be happy to have the iPhone, but because they deversified their product they will not be made or broken by the loss or gain of one phone.
That, is the danger that AT&T is in. It would be interesting to see what AT&T would have done without the iPhone. Guess they would have some Android phones like everyone else, but would their business have grown the same? I think not. Now, what are they going to do when they lose exclusivity?

At this point, we can only guess as to what would have happened. But in my seven years with the company, I've never seen Verizon put all their eggs in one basket. I think the iPhone would have brought in a lot of customers, but Verizon's ultra-conservative business practices should have diversified them anyway. Where they are today, in 2010, is a product who they were in 2000 when they became one company. Of course, I can only speculate, but I honestly feel like Verizon would have been ok, facing the loss of exclusivity with the iPhone.

If anything, Apple probably would have decided to expand into other technologies sooner, seeing how a GSM model would have been lucrative for the world-wide market.

AT&T seems to have acted like...

I do not criticize Verizon for passing or AT&T for buying. We are here now, however. I think Verizon should negotiate with Apple and bring the iphone into the fold. I am not saying that they should give in or anything. Just make a deal.

I hope so, too. I'd rather see a fair lineup that includes the iPhone as well as Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and especially Android.

I hope that whatever deal is made that it's based on mutual business and compromise, and not the soul-selling take-it-in-the-rear kind of deal we all assume AT&T made to get the phone in the first place.

Considering that Apple reportedly only had a concept at the time and was making obscene demands (which AT&T apparently accepted) I can't really blame Verizon for turning them down THEN. However...NOW they should reconsider. It should not be acceptable to lose potential customers...

Also, at the time the business model was unheard of - the phone was what, $500? No contract? Not even activated or supported by the carrier? That was unheard of then.

A year later, it all changed. Apple learned that lesson and changed to be more in line with the industry. At that point, Verizon might have been perfectly fine with the agreement (who knows? Not us, that's for sure), but by that time it was too late.

I'm sure the reconsidered it within the first two years, but at that point they either have to come to Apple groveling for a piece of pie, or pretend that they're not effected by the iPhone while suggesting they'd now be open to it. If VZW took the tough-guy hardline against Apple, they'd never have a shot. Keep Apple...
