I have a line on my account for her because everyone thought she should have a phone. She never used it because she was mean and refused to use it. Then she died. I've continued to pay for the line even though it has never been used. Will Verizon waive the early termination fee. I know AT&T does without requiring proof, but I have no clue what Verizon will do. I don't really have access to a death certificate because my family thinks I'm being callous when I ask for one to avoid an etf. I just don't think it's fair I have to pay for something she never wanted in the first place.

Yes VZW will waive the ETF with no proof required. Just let them know the user of the phone died

I was under the impression that applied to the account holder only, not secondary lines...
...
If they would do it for one user, why not the other? Verizon would be foolish to nitpick on this one. Potential for bad PR could be huge.

If that works, anytime one wants out of a contract, one could just call in and say, "I bought the phone for poor Uncle Jim...and he croaked." Another thing I have thought about is calling in and saying one has orders to Iraq or Afghanistan. I do believe they no longer require those to be faxed or taken to a store these days.

Proof is still needed for Military Deployment in order to waive the early termination fee.

I didn't want to mention it, in case anyone gets any ideas. But since you mentioned it... 😉

Sorry. No loyalty to VZW. Sure I get a little upset when customers post here trying to justify why they should get a free Droid with no contract extension to replace their W755. Those are just old war wounds aching.

My Droid wasn't free, but it was *close* to free 🤤
I only paid $20 for mine, there's strings attatched, but hey I'll do whatever I'm told to do to get a Droid for $20!!!
As far as I'm concerned I got one heck of a deal!

You missed my point...
I would still require proof of death. But if ANYONE on a contract dies, the contract should be nullified immediately with no ETF. IMO.

No. They actually will do it without proof these days. It was a real hassle requiring death certificate copies be taken to the stores and faxed in.

I just dont think people would abuse it. The original poster came to phonescoop before even talking to a verizon rep.
I dont think people like joking about death and that could have some serious consequences anyway.

It used to be much stricter. It had to be the account owner, unless someone was going to assume liability. And we had to have a death certificate, no exceptions.
Now, things are completely different.

Thanks for the update.

Ooh, so we can just pretend, and get right out of any agreement?
Not that I would do such a horrible thing.
