"Verizon Wireless has the most retail customers of any U.S. carrier, and added 2.2 million new lines during Q4 — almost all of which were post-paid customers — bringing their total customer base to 91.4 million."

"...the company also said data revenue, from services like text messaging or browsing the Web, was up 31 percent, to $16 billion, largely driven by increased use of services and data plans by cellphone customers. Additionally, wireless data revenue represented a larger share of all service revenue, 32 percent compared with 26.5 percent a year earlier." ---N.Y.Times

I haven't heard much about this. Did your CEO McAdams brag about this at the kickoff today, VZW employees? It makes me wonder how many subscribers A...

Looks like AT&T out-gained VZW by a half million subscribers. They finished with 85.1 million subscribers.

I would like to know what the numbers would be if they didn't have the best phone on the planet! - the IPHONE! That and the GoPhone are the only things keeping them alive.

I would not go so far as to say that AT&T would be losing subscribers without the iphone, but their numbers would be significantly impacted certainly. I'd be surprised if half (or more) of those new activations were not iphones. Despite the heavy criticism of the iphone, I am convince that if seventy year old grannies can use it, there is something to it.

I wonder how many customers Verizon would have if they had some different advertising campaign other than "largest network". And brainwashing the entire country into thinking they are the Jesus network.

I've come across people who aren't even phone geeks like you and I, just regular ole people, who when I tell them I'm with ATT say "I'm sorry".

I really do think those "network" advertisements have the country brainwashed, I really do.

Marketing works. I don't blame Verizon for having an effective marketing campaign. The other guys should try harder. That is one thing I give credit to Stan Sigman for. He said in an interview, basically that he liked the way Verizon ran their company. And Cingular was number one then and under Stan they emulated many of Verizon's best practices...and it worked. I applaud Sprint for their Most Dependable 3G network claim. It worked for Verizon...why not?

Personally I'm more interested in local coverage more so than national. Also, I'm more inerested in testimonies from just real world customers as to if they are happy with their carrier. So advertisement brainwashing doesn't work on me.

Some could argue that all advertising is really just a diluted form of brainwashing.

3.7 iphones were activated last quarter. I'm willing to bet MOST of those new activations were iphone users.

Actually, it is. I thought the number would be higher. They had 4.3 million in the 3rd quarter (3.2 million of which were iphones). They CLOBBERED Verizon in the 3rd quarter. This was a twelve round judges decision, but nevertheless a victory for AT&T. Still they must be somewhat disappointed that the Map for that, Droid and idon't campaigns apparently had some traction. Verizon has come out swinging. It still looks as though iphone beats "The Network".

But the churn number is waht intrigued me...Verizon churn going up....ATT churn going down...And they are equal now.....

The Mighty V is slipping.

Yes. Verizon's churn numbers were tighter back in the day because they extended contracts for rate plan changes up until October 2007. Those days are over. The only way they are going to get contracts is through subsidizing handsets or giving a month of service in exchange for a one year extension (over the phone). Yes, there are some customers who do this. As unbelievable as that sounds.

So your saying in exchange for one month of free service, customer has to agree to 1yr contract? Interesting, I've never heard of that.

What you mentioned about Verizon stopping contract extensions for rate plan changes, Tmo needs to STOP that!!!

Reason I say that is because they are deploying HSPA+ and I am very interested in that, so maybe if they came out with a desirable Android smartphone, badda bing I'll switch over. But I like the freedom of being able to change my rate plan whenever according to my needs/budget with ATT.

Not only have people accepted a one year for a free month of service, they've also done it for a stash of "bonus minutes" that act a little like rollover minutes (they apply automatically when you go over your minutes).

Traditionally, T-Mobile has been known to extend your contract for most any change. I always joke that if you sneeze while on the phone with their customer care, a extra year is added to your contract. Sneeze twice and... well... you know.

Yeah, that bothers me a LOT about Tmo. I do like my freedom with ATT. I've alays known contracts to deal with equipment upgrades, not account modifications. Is Tmo the only one left in the industry that does this to people? I heard that Verizon stopped doing it a little over 2yrs ago.

Well, ATT is getting 5 Android phones, so we'll see. But Tmo is deploying HSPA+, and that is really, really attractive to me, I heard somebody on Phone Scoop who lives in Philly is getting 6-7mbps on Tmo's HSPA+ network!

I wanted to go with Sprint a few years back when I still worked at Verizon, but they would not let me activate a CPE without a two year contract. The ONLY reason a carrier should be able to get a contract is for subsidizing a handset or in the case of those idiots who accept bonus minutes or a month free service. I swear there is a sucker born everyday.

In that case your right! You bring your own phone, you shouldn't have to sign a stupid contract!
I know you can bring your own gsm phone to ATT and not be required to sign a contract. Either an unlocked/
unbranded phone, or just some older used phone either someone gave you, or got off ebay.

My next phone, an Android smartphone, unfortunatley is going to have to be contract, cause I can't afford to pay full retail right now.

So there are well over 20k apps in the Android Market, and out of those 20k, only 50 are games? I tend to like simple classic arcade type games, Pac-Man, Pin Ball.

I registered on Android Central, I just wanted to make sure I got MY username "Jayshmay". At first I mistyped it and didn't include the s in Jayshmay, but I got the moderator "Rich Brome" of that site I guess to fix it for me.

I am extremely diligently trying to become 100% debt free however fast as I can. So I'm not too sure how soon I will get an Android smartphone, I suppose that will be about $199, and if I get it @ Best Buy they don't make people wait for rebates there. So I don't know how soon I'll be comfortable throwing down the money for a new smartphone, but it'll...

So what is this video on YouTube called? Can you give me the link?

Also, Menno, I've got a few more Android ?'s for you.

I heard that when the G1 was new, Android 1.1, when people recieved MMS's, they couldn't save pictures! Has that been fixed?

Also, in the alarm, can you set it to go off at a certain time for work days? On my phone, I can select which days are work days.
