LG EnV Touch to require web plan
It's an update that came out. The EnV Touch is an Enhanced Multimedia Phone like the Samsung Rogue, so from now on it will require a data plan like the Rogue.

My question remains: how is the computer going to force this when there were people who bought the phone before such a requirement went into effect? A new MEID/ESN group? A "refresh" model? MEID date tracking? Or are just going to tell customers who need a warranty or insurance exchange that they're now screwed?

I read it in Infomanager (I think the same article that talked about the Data ETF), I agree with you there that how is the system going to KNOW that they require a data plan. All the article said was that anybody that activated the LG EnV Touch on or after the date would require a data plan.

The system currently tracks everything by MEID/ESN. Unless LG and Verizon are changing the MEID sequence entirely and looking to carry two different stocks of warranty units, I'm not sure how they would pull this off.
What's to stop the computer system from automatically forcing someone who originally bought the phone before November 8 into a data plan the second they do an ESN change? They'd have to have two distinct stock numbers - one for the original Env Touch, and one for a new series of Env Touch.

So, I just got exchanged my env touch under warranty but they had none in stock and are shipping it. Does anyone know if I activate it Nov 8 or after will I be required to buy a data plan??

I am waiting for an env Touch that verizon is sending me to replace my env3 (have had it replaced 5 times since june). I am going to be forced into a data plan? Also, will the new ETF apply since I'm not signing a new contract or anything?

ETFs are specified by the contract, your etf can not change without a new contract.
as for the the data plan, by this time you already know the answer to it ;)
but for those that dont, the env touch can no longer be activated onto a line without the data plan, it is a requirement from the system. So for example if you get a warranty replacement for one, you will have to get a data plan.

I bought my EnV touch out right (no upgrade) on Nov. 6th, and was not informed at all about the required data plan, i activated it on my account on the 8th, and once again was not informed about a data plan. I choose the device because I checked at a retail store, a corp store, on-line, on-line cs chat, and even called into CS to find out if the phone needed a data plan. At all times I was informed it does not. About 4 days after i started using the device the battery took a dive, so I went into my local Corp store, and the rep helped, and was very happy with the rep. While I was there, i noticed the data plan on my account, and have been informed that my only option is to use my upgrade to get a different device. I have been out of contract...

I beliee you have a min of 2 weeks to try out new devices. Just return the Touch to the store for a full refund, and find another device which doesn't require the data plan.
Also since I believe the data plan is tied to the date a particular device went into service, a possible loophole around this is to buy a gently used Touch or other similar device which had an orig in-service date prior to 11-8-09.
At least this is how it worked for the smart phones last year which required the min $30/mo data plan, even though some devices had wifi and would work fine w/o a data plan.

Yeah that would be a good idea, but after all the research I did, I didn't think I'd need to keep receipt, so I no longer have the receipt.
