It varies by network.

For Verizon:

Because of the Razr fiasco, Motorola's are "known" for bad battery life and software issues. Not all motorola's are this way. The newer ones are decent, but not the best out there IMO.

LG's are known for excellent battery life and build quality (chocolates excluded). They seem to hold up to wear and tear better than a lot of phones do. IMO they are the best manufacturer for Verizon (not including smart phones) at this time.

Samsung is really hit or miss. When they make a good phone, it really is excellent. But when they make a dud (GLYDE) it is truly aweful.

I would add a few things to Menno's comments.

Motorola: slower processors on many of their phones, causing a noticeable lag. Not the best for heavy texters as it tends to lag due to limited memory paired with the processor issue.

LG: Consistently reliable with a couple duds over the years. Lately, I've noticed a persistent software quirk where LGs turn off randomly or have one day out of the month where the battery life sucks, only to go back to normal on the next charge.

Samsung: hit or miss is the best description. Some are good, some are bad. Samsung is typically a year behind LG in innovations.

Are LG's really that good these days?

I few years ago, I had a couple of LG's and the experience has kept me away ever since. The build quality was terrible...very thin fragile plastic. The call quality and and signal reception was miserable too. I've only sent back two phones in all my years of cellular usage and both were LG's.

YES

LGs are the best overall by far, leaps and bounds, 8360 is probably the best overall phone we carry in my opinion (price, bells and whistles and overall solidness of the phone itslef)

It's pretty much been said but I'll reiterate a little bit based on what I have noticed in the store.

LG - Very responsive and very smooth running devices. Never really notice any lag or delays while going through the menus which make them great for texting and also for people who can navigate through the phone menus quickly. On some of the phones though they feel very very plastic-y and cheap. (8360, 5000 series)

Motorola - Slower processors = menu lag. The speaker quality in motos seems to be better and in most cases signal strength is a little better as well. They need to work out the lag issue though, as it cripples the Krave when compared to the Dare. At the risk of getting some flak I'll say that usually I recommend motos to olde...

Yes, they are the strongest phones on the network IMO.

A few years back.. did you either have the chocolate, or the all plastic phone that was supposed to be like the RAZR? Those were two Duds.

If you are looking at newer phones, any of the ENV line and the 8360 are great quality phones. The 5500 isn't bad, but just remember that it was built as a basic phone, so it doesn't have all the features.

Are you talking about non-Verizon LG's? Cuz there are a few LGs made for Cingular/at&t that may rank as some of the worst phones ever made.

When it comes to Verizon, they're totally different.
