Verizon to allow you to use phones from other carriers?
I just read something in Consumer Reports about Verizon allowing you to use phones from other carriers as long as they meet some specifications. Does anyone have any more information about this?
I have been eligible for a new phone for a few months but haven't upgraded because I don't like any of Verizon's phones. I think they have a pretty poor selection of phones - it would be great if we could buy a phone elsewhere and use it on Verizon's network.

This has been in the works for a while now, not sure if they are actually approving devices yet however.
Basically you have to submit the device to them, they send it off to make sure it meets their pre-set criteria, then if approved it can be activated.

It has to be a CDMA device (if it uses a sim chip chances are it does not meet this requirement unless it is as CDMA global phone).
Also, it has to be a device that is not locked "exclusive" to one carrier or the other. These devices might be able to work on verizons network, but verizon cannot activate them without going onto shady ground.
Finally, the device needs to be approved by verizon.. your best bet would be alltel phones.
