According to BGR, the GPS chips have finally been unlocked on the 8330 Curve and the 8130 Pearl. Hopefully Google Maps will be in working order soon...

some are saying its the new firmware, 4.5.0.97. However, others are saying it "just started working." While some have had trouble, they were able to resolve by resending the service books and a battery pull.

This could all be a mistake and Verizon could very well lock it back down. We all shall see.

I dont think this is a mistake.

Mine started working. I had to go into GPS settings in options and put "location on". Seems to be working pretty well for me.

I also resent my service books and did a battery pull.

I have some questions. First do I need to download Google maps to get turn by turn directions or will the maps application start doing it after all the changes you all have made? Second if I need to download google maps is it best to download it straight onto the phone from the phone? I hope these questions dont sound stupid but I am still kinda new to the Blackberry.

Thanks in advance.

Us the Blackberry maps application. NOT Google Maps. You will not have turn by turn directions unless you use VZW Navigator.

Works on my Curve too (4.5.0.77). BB Maps is dead on, and Google Maps has always worked, but just not as precise using towers.

I use the same Curve version. BB Maps is very accurate...including speeds...I deleted Google Maps yesterday because it was never really close (well, sort of, but not really).

Google maps was okay, but I might delete it. I guess have two mapping programs on your phone and a garmin in the car might be a bit overkill, lol

Why the excitement over Google Maps? I used it on my AT&T Tilt and I was not impressed. Locations were not accurate and there was no turn by turn or audio announcements. I finally got my Telenav demo account so I could use AT&T Nav.

Does a different version of Google Maps exist for CDMA or Verizon? Google Maps just never impressed me but it seems to be popular. It is only popular because it is free?

Because Google Maps can find virtually any location/address you need. Its far and away better than any Navigation device/program in that respect. FWIW I use the native S60 version on my N95. And its just better than the Java version. But the Java version is sufficient enough.

I have never had an issue with either AT&T Navigator or google not finding an address. I just think it is somewhat worthless if you are using it while driving if you cant hear verbal commands. I have almost rammed into street signs trying to read my google maps to determine where to turn.

I have had issues with every program finding my home address, except Google. If you think its worthless, there is no doubt you are in the minority, not the majority. Just my opinion...

Icy, I don't know if you know this or not but and I am only making the assumption that you are speaking of GOOGLE Maps only here and not the Maps 2.0 program Nokia has but the version you have on your N95 is JAVA (J2ME) based. Symbian S60 has a native J2ME (java emulator) in the program base. This is why the program is compatible with so many devices.

*Side note: I had the N95 for about a year or so before I switched to a BB.*

Yes I was speaking about the Google Maps, not the Nokia Maps 2.0. The version of Google Maps that I have is a native S60 client made specifically for S60 FP1 devices, and its a .sisx file. Does it have a Java Emulator built into it? I do not know. I just know its better than the standalone Java version that is compatible with most phones.

As for Nokia Maps. Its search is so horrible it couldn't find your next door neighbor if she was standing next to you naked!! 😲 BUT...with Google Maps, once you find your destination, you save it as a favorite, and its automatically incorporated into Nokia Maps under your favorites there, That makes a world of difference.

18 months and counting with my N95 and have had my Dare almost a month.
